I heard the Kentucky Colonels were looking at him pretty hard after his sophomore season.jess settles would have had a mice nba career if not for back injuries.
I see the same thing.
With up tempo style of play that we use I see our rotation going very very deep with every able and capable body contributing to some extent.
A healthy Eric May allows us to keep pressure on that much longer with fresh ant talented players.
I am so torn on Eric May. He had a productive freshman season and then some decent non-conference seasons his sophomore and junior seasons. Here is my problem with May, if Iowa has him at the 2 spot, whoever the PG is has to be a one-man press breaker. Eric's dribbling skills are simply poor, I don't think anyone will dispute that.I don't see him as a great defender, maybe it is because of injury problems once conference play has began the last two years. I don't see him as a good passer, or comfortable with the ball in his hands unless he is off the ground to dunk. My first blog entry was focused a lot on May and Payne and how they were building blocks for the Iowa program. Well, looking back a couple years later...wow, that was stupid. Is it all because of injuries, or was May simply overvalued on a terrible Iowa team? I don't dislike the kid in any way, but I feel if May is playing double digit minutes for Iowa, that may not be a good thing, on the flip side, it may mean he has had a transformation as a player. There is something about being a Senior that changes players and their mentality. Most people that coach on the high school level or higher would tend to agree.May played his best as a freshman and if he can give that effort within conference play, something that we haven't seen the last two seasons, then Iowa will be a far better team for it.
ive seen some PTL action and he looks like the same limited player that he was last year. weak with the dribble, and not quick enough to get around anyone so he ends up picking up his dribble at the free throw line and clogging up the offense. i am not really buying the injury excuse for not being a star...he is simply an easy scout and has a very limited game.
great kid though.
if may is at the 2 spot then i would guess (majority of the time) marble is at the 3. this means you have another ballhandler on the court to take pressure off the pg without may having to bring it up. he has had so many injuries over the last 2 yrs he is kind of like the incoming frosh that we are really just taking a best guess at what he will bring to the table. if he is healthy and stays healthy i think he can bring what he has shown during his healthy stretches and that is more than we need out of him to push this team as a senior leader.
I guess what I am saying is that if he plays the 2-spot at anytime, Iowa is not better for it. May will never be a primary/secondary ball-handler. In college basketball today, teams need to have three capable ball-handlers on the floor all the time.
+ gazzilionI am not sure with the obsession on May is. He simply is not good enough and has been surpassed by better players in the program. His injury status affected the team very little last season. The team improved quite a bit last year with him out of the line and/or playing limited minutes.
If he plays a lot of minutes this season that may not be a good thing.
Good kid but it is just a matter of being a freshman contributor one of the worst teams in Iowa b-ball history.
Kind of wish he tried football. Captain hindsight yes I know. Surely he could have found a position with his strength and athleticism. Still could redshirt this year and give it a go next year if he changed his mind. Eric you could probably earn a living playing football if you wanted.
I see him as a "high energy" player coming off of the bench.
He can defend, he can run and he can rebound. He doesn't have to score to help this team.
