I did my own undercover recon with their football team.

Probably the same time iowa basketball fans stop using last years schedule as a reason for not making the tournament.

Section makes a good point. When all else fails change the subject.

With that said, how many Big Ten teams did your basketball team beat this year?

The point was that teams can improve and have the same record. As for when rhoads gets more than 6 wins I think 2014, team is very young this year.

Everyone in the league plays the same schedule. When will Clone fans stop using the schedule as an excuse for Paul Rhoads not eclipsing that elusive 3-win plateau?

Next thing you know they'll be using the fact that ISMoo is in Ames as the excuse for... oh wait, that would be legit.

You're over your head, my man. Iowa didn't make the tournament last year because A.) they had a very weak non-con, and B.) they couldn't close games out on the road. Looked at on the whole, their conference schedule was actually pretty easy once you got past the first 7 games.

So in summary, Iowa's schedule didn't keep them out of the tournament last year - it was their lack of success on the road that kept them out.

ISU fans lack of awareness is amazing really. The football program hasn't shown one bit of progress over 4 years, yet they think they are on the upswing.......Iowa BB on the other hand has shown significant improvement every year since Fran came here.....yet ISU fan mocks Iowa for being excited about their BB progress, all the while saying their football team is on the rise.....it is very odd indeed

Although true, many here clung onto the fact the Big Ten was the strongest conference in the country. It's fine if you don't want to admit it, but it did happen quite a bit. So BryceC does has somewhat of a point.

I said this repeatedly on this board and was always countered with the big 12 sucks and if iowa was in that league they would make the tourney no problem.

To stick w/ basketball, iowa could go 9-9 again in the league due to the improved sched. Yes, Iowa State's big 12 schedule is the same teams but sched difficulty increased last season due to the improvement of those teams.

So in a vacuum, ISU is improving but compared to the other teams in their conference they aren't? How is this any way to justify your program's "improvement"? Sounds to me like you're just falling behind the rest of your conference.

You have 9 senior starters, not including your Kicker and Punter as well. Dirrrr!

If the Hawks running backs and o-line are healthy I don't see any reason why they shouldn't run over the Cyclone front 7. I think the elusiveness of Canzeri and the power of Weisman should give them headaches. Whoever the QB is should have some opportunities over the top because the only chance ISU has at stopping the run game is crowding the box. If we can complete a couple big passes then I think Iowa wins comfortably. If not it's gonna be another close one.

They suffered huge losses at LB and their defensive line has been paper thin for years now. Use Weisman to get them on their heels, and insert Canzeri to crack open some big plays. I don't see anyone at defensive line on their roster who is capable changing the status quo.

I love the optimism, but if Iowa sticks with the ineffectual 3 yard horizontal passing attack, that is apparently beyond comprehension of mere mortals... Iowa will be looking at 8 and 9 man fronts all day long with a heavy dose of run/pass blitzing to attack an inept offensive scheme at the line of scrimmage. Throw in some inexperienced QB miscues (fumbled snaps, delay of game penalties, interceptions and burning timeouts on routine game situations, and we will have found the enemy - us.

I want to be an optimist in the worst way, but objectively looking at the 2012 season and the coaching adjustments made to continue this charade of an offense into 2013, quite simply doesn't bode well for the upcoming season. Somebody please convince me that we are not going to run that same horizontal fail offense ever again.

I'm with you on the horizantal attack but I think it was also a product of JVB not being able to extend the play, create or find a secondary target. He was a terrible fit for the GD offense. Sokol averaged 10.2 ypa on 13 of 18 attempts in the spring game. A lot of those completions were 10+ yards vertical throws to other than the primary receiver which to me was encouraging and refreshing.

JVB only averaged 5.72 ypa which was 110th in the country. If you look at Texas 2004 to 2009 they averaged well over 8 ypa which is very good. Of course they had playmaker QBs that weren't necessarily locked into the set play.

KF also needs to allow the QB to make plays. We went from dead last in interceptions thrown per attempt in 2009 (most int's per attempt in B1G) to 1st, 2nd, and 2nd in 2010, 2011 and 2012. I think this indicates we over-corrected and have consciously become too risk averse and too quick just to throw it away or throw very conservative passes.
