Ellingson

Who is going to redshirt in next years class? Having 6 scholarship Freshmen in one class is going to hinder recruiting for upcoming years.

I bet Fran either banks the extra scholarship or it goes to a player with less than 4 years of eligibility. That's still 5 but as was said...these things work themselves out in due time.

I get the numbers game but say the red shirt year helps him. So if he does develop and gets to be pretty good then why on earth wouldn't you want him for his 5th year as opposed to getting a freshmen you have no clue about? It's was like burning Daniels RS for just a hand full of touches his true freshman year... Now football and bball are way different but my thought process is the same. Your wasting a year of development. Now maybe he just didn't want to and I assume when it comes right down to it it's the kids call...

Fran came right out and said that they won't play him past the point of being eligible for a medical redshirt unless it's in their best interest. If that's the case, nothing has changed as far as him getting an extra year goes.

These things work themselves out. For instance Gesells and Woody class got smaller by 2 when Ingram and Meyer left. A 6 person class is ok by me, let them fight for minutes and if you can't earn them on the court move on.

This is true. If guys toward the end of the roster want to move on for more playing time, it's not a bad thing (some would argue it's healthy). And if a guy works hard and wants to stick around and get his degree from Iowa, even if he's not going play much, it seems as if Fran will not run him off. Which is the right thing to do.

They should if they aren't ready to play... He's clearly not ready. I've never understood playing a kid in garbage time 4 or 5 times in a year and thinking they are getting something out of it. He and other kids in his shoes would be way better off living in the weight room practicing and getting used to being a college kid then blowing a year of eligibility to barely play. Nobody thinks he's going pro early so an extra year would have been just the ticket. If he can get the medical RS it'd be great for him.

In Ellingson's case, specifically, we have to recall that he had foot surgery in the late summer. When he was well enough to play again (sometime after the start of the season) Fran stated he would play him in some situations to see how well his foot responded, particularly, the pain. I'd say they decided to shut him down. Otherwise, I saw enough to believe this kid is going to be a Ben Brust type for us. I think he's that good a shooter.

So, again, it would appear that Ellingson hadn't recovered enough to withstand a full season, so he's redshirting.

It is also possible that one of the players coming in could redshirt. It won't be Wagner. We will be thin at forward with Gabe and White leaving. It also probably won't be Fleming -- this team could always use more shooters. That leaves Hutton and Moss. I think both will eventual be solid contributors, but hard to believe that both will get serious playing time next year. We could redshirt one of them, most likely Moss just because Hutton is more advanced defensively and I think that matters more as a Freshman.

It may depend on whether we sign another big this year. If so, that means Uthoff likely stays at the 3 and less time for Hutton and Moss. If not, Uthoff may have to play the 4, leaving more time for Hutton and Moss.

I think you may be right about Uthoff at the 4. The team will be stocked full of wings next season and thin in the post. Unless Fran can find a 5th year transfer or solid JUCO front court player, I think we may be seeing a lot of Uthoff at the 4 and I hate to say it, possibly a little bit at the 5 next season. The only other player with experience that could possibly play significant minutes in the post alongside Woody would be Uhl and he, like Uthoff, needs to continue to get stronger in order to consistently fight through contact and be able to bang down low against more physical matchups. Wagner is coming in but I would rather not rely on a freshman playing huge minutes unless out of necessity.

I really hope Fran uses the last scholarship on a front court player of some sort. Getting a player that could play significant minutes at the 4 and 5 would be ideal. I just don't like the idea of being exploited in the post due to lacking proper depth of interior defenders. Then again maybe Wagner will shock us and pull off a Melvin Ejim like freshman campaign (please forgive for that reference). Not holding my breath on that one.

In other words, if Fran banks the last scholarship, we may be seeing a mix of Uthoff, Uhl, and Wagner at the 4 with Uthoff playing some 5 when Woody is on the bench or in foul trouble. That my friends scares the heck out of me. Not to mention Uthoff is such a big offensive mismatch out on the wing and I'd hate to see him not be able to exploit shooting over smaller defenders anymore... Sorry for that rant.

Back to the point of this thread. I hope Brady is able to get healthy and back on track for next season. You can always use shooters, even if they are only role players that provide a spark every few games. Not saying that's all Brady will be, he hasn't had the chance to play much for anyone to have a fair opinion.

OK, so since you're convinced I thought I'd do a little reconnaissance. Remember that Jeremy Morgan is a 2013 recruit and both Brady Ellingson and Wyatt Lohaus are 2014 recruits.

From Rivals:
Brady Ellingson - 3 stars.
Wyatt Lohaus - not rated. (as in no stars)
Jeremy Morgan - not rated. (as in no stars)

From 247Sports:
Brady Ellingson - 3 stars. Rated 286th overall.
Wyatt Lohaus - not rated. (as in no stars)
Jeremy Morgan - 3 stars. Rated 187th overall.

From ESPN:
Brady Ellingson - 2 stars. Scout grade 65.
Wyatt Lohaus - 2 stars. Scout grade 66.
Jeremy Morgan - 2 stars. Scout grade 65.

Seems to me that they are all fairly even. And if Iowa "misses" on more low-rated in-state players, so be it. Right now the jury is out on whether or not these three are hits or misses.

Excellent post, they seems pretty even to me. HawkeyeMike needs to take off his loser colored glasses to realize Lohaus and Morgan told Iowa they didn't want to come there, hence no offer. They both will be better than this 997th best guard from Wisconsin. Plus they wil win more games and play in more NCAA Tournaments.

Not bringing in more mid-major type players is not a recruiting miss. Missing out on EC Matthews, Tyler Ullis, Riley LaChance, those are recruiting misses.

Do you know anything about college basketball? They are both better than anything iowa puts on the court. Plus they are playing on a Nationaly rated team.

The best quality conference win they can get is against an average Wichita State team. Iowa's ceiling is much higher than UNI. Iowa could be ranked after this weekend if they beat Ohio State again and get some help with other teams losing. UNI has win just about every game from here on out to win their conference. If not, they have to get lucky to get two teams in. You better not lose to Evansville again.

You had better not lose to us again....man I wish we played you again. Those easy wins are hard to come by. We could move up to the top 10 this weekend if we win and get some help from other teams losing using your theory. FYI 6-12 Bradley scored more points against UNI than iowa did.

But Bradley also has one of my all-time favorite juco players that played at SCC. Loved the way Warren Jones played juco ball. No consolation as a Hawkeye fan, but gave me a chance to name drop

My all time favorite player from SCC was Winston Garland. He was from back in the day.

Looks like I got another stalker...Lohaus and Morgan are the definition of mid-major type guards, Iowa has plenty of those guys already. No thanks, Iowa already has plenty of guys who can only average 5 ppg and barely shoot 30% from 3 in the B10, we don't need guys who can only put up those numbers in the MVC.

Wow, this is a first, but in this thread, with regard to Jeremy Morgan and W Lohaus, I have to
side with the UNI panthers. And this is NOT EVEN close. From what I've seen, Brady E couldn't carry
either one of those guys gym bag.

You got to play Iowa when they played terrible and couldn't make a shot. Play 9 more games and you will lose more of then 10 than win.

You do realize that Ellingson being great, or pathertic doesn't make Lohaus or Morgan any better. Mike23 is right, they are just 2 mid major players who would struggle against B1G caliber players. Iowa needs much, much better players than those 3 if they want to start finishing in the top of the B1G.

A stalker...? Funny. You don't need guys that shoot 30%? You need players that can shoot AT LEAST 30%. I hope that you aren't including iowa above the MVC.
