Ellingson

Looked like Ellingson was in street clothes tonight.

Is he still eligible for a red shirt? Or is he hurt again? Or potential transfer spot depending on where recruiting ends up?

I haven't seen anything official but he is almost certainly a redshirt. Fran had said earlier they would play him the allowable number of games. If he could play through the injury (pain tolerance) they would play him if he couldn't they would redshirt him. The medical redshirt looks to be the decision.

Guards don't redshirt.
They should if they aren't ready to play... He's clearly not ready. I've never understood playing a kid in garbage time 4 or 5 times in a year and thinking they are getting something out of it. He and other kids in his shoes would be way better off living in the weight room practicing and getting used to being a college kid then blowing a year of eligibility to barely play. Nobody thinks he's going pro early so an extra year would have been just the ticket. If he can get the medical RS it'd be great for him.

Not saying this is the case here but sometimes you don't want the player for the 5th year because you want to free up the scholarship.

Wow, just Wow.

Talk about a Recruiting Miss. IOWA had the chance to offer and
acquire the Mr Basketball for IOWA two straight years, (Jeremy Morgan & Wyatt Lohaus)
Those guys both play for a Top 25 ranked team.
And yet, we're lead to believe the 997th best guard in Wisconsin is the answer??

Come on, Man.
Go Hawks

Actually, this is similar to what he had been doing the previous games. Fooled us all!

Not bringing in more mid-major type players is not a recruiting miss. Missing out on EC Matthews, Tyler Ullis, Riley LaChance, those are recruiting misses.

Winner!

Agree, hope it's just because of our depth and the fact he needs to put on a few pounds.

I think it's a bit early to start shoveling dirt on the dude. I know we didn't see much of him, but I liked his movement and speed when he was in there. He had a terrible start for a freshman...being hurt, playing a short period of time, apparently not fully recovered, and being hurt again. I'm willing to withhold judgment until he's well.

First, Morgan and Lohaus aren't even in the same class. In the previous class, Iowa only had two scholarships open. Uthoff got one and Jok got the other. If I recall correctly, another one freed up after Ingram transferred but that was after Morgan and Lohaus signed with UNI. Are you saying that we should have taken either of these guys over Jok? Second, Ellingson was first team all state in Wisconsin. Third, Ellingson is hitting 66% from 3 point range this season. Admittedly, it's a small sample size, but he was also a great shooter in Wisconsin.

Ellingson might not have the jump shot of Jok or Andrew Fleming's muscle, but he is likely the best pure shooter. This team doesn't have an excess of great shooters. He may never start, but if he can hit 40% of his threes and play solid defense without turning the ball over, he will have a great career at Iowa. It's too bad he was injured this year. We could really use another shooter.

Most good teams have a guy like him that can come in and give a few quality minutes to give the starters a breather. Then, every so often, catch fire and help get a win that otherwise would have been a loss. When you have 13 scholarship players and only an 8 to 10 man rotation, there is nothing wrong with having a guy like Ellingson on your team. He's probably a guy you will rarely notice unless he's doing something good. Who knows, he might be the next Kent McClausland.

All very good points. I think that would be a perfect role for him. A Brody Boyd type who comes off the bench.

I'm also in the camp of not giving up on the kid. He was a pretty prolific scorer in high school and hit a bunch of clutch late game baskets. He arrived with a foot injury and didn't even participate in the PTL. I'd like to see him after a year in the weight room and have more time to participate with the team in the offseason.

Obviously it would be better to get a lights out 3 point shooter who is also an all around stud at every other aspect of the game. Realistically though, if he's as lights out as advertised, he was probably worth the scholarship even if he's only a decent all around player.

OK, so since you're convinced I thought I'd do a little reconnaissance. Remember that Jeremy Morgan is a 2013 recruit and both Brady Ellingson and Wyatt Lohaus are 2014 recruits.

From Rivals:
Brady Ellingson - 3 stars.
Wyatt Lohaus - not rated. (as in no stars)
Jeremy Morgan - not rated. (as in no stars)

From 247Sports:
Brady Ellingson - 3 stars. Rated 286th overall.
Wyatt Lohaus - not rated. (as in no stars)
Jeremy Morgan - 3 stars. Rated 187th overall.

From ESPN:
Brady Ellingson - 2 stars. Scout grade 65.
Wyatt Lohaus - 2 stars. Scout grade 66.
Jeremy Morgan - 2 stars. Scout grade 65.

Seems to me that they are all fairly even. And if Iowa "misses" on more low-rated in-state players, so be it. Right now the jury is out on whether or not these three are hits or misses.

2012, Snap, PC, CP and Knight...I agree with what each of you said in the 6 posts preceding mine in this thread. I have nothing to add since the 5 of you have covered it all...from my perspective.

Who is going to redshirt in next years class? Having 6 scholarship Freshmen in one class is going to hinder recruiting for upcoming years.

These things work themselves out. For instance Gesells and Woody class got smaller by 2 when Ingram and Meyer left. A 6 person class is ok by me, let them fight for minutes and if you can't earn them on the court move on.
