Ellingson Question

With CW taking minutes here at end of year, does Brady transfer and open up a scholarship?

I think he works hard but if he stays I'm afraid he will get passed up by CW, Bohannen and others. Don't see a ton of PT for him in the future.

Edit - Should have also asked, if he leaves where does scholarship go? Personally I would love to see a Grad Transfer Big for one year.

He's a great kid, but I hope he transfers. He was brought on for his 3pt expertise, which turns out isn't so expert.

He gone. He is very stiff in the hips. He has no explosion in any part of his game and his legs abandoned him this year. He is on hawkeye life support I'd say. If somehow he chooses to stay and part of the plan isn't to run him off I see him eventually possibly playing a Jeff moe, Ryan Luehrsman, Brady? Hogan role. I left Mac off of there because Mac was a player. He will be a role player at best with his limited ability to guard. Just those hips..difficult to watch at the division 1 level no matter how good he can shoot....eventually. I think he won't be around 3 years from now with the talent coming in.

Honestly, haven't seen enough of him to know for sure. That said, there seems to be a lot of talent on the bench and coming in, so he likely will need to show a lot very quickly.

Talent coming in??? We can hope but we don't know. Brady was suppose to be good. I try not to mention the All-American JC point guard that peed down his leg. We also said the same thing about one of our freshmen (Fleming) who has hardly played at all. Given how little he has played how do you know he won't transfer? He was considered one of our better recruits when he committed. Some (including Jon) thought he would bolt and was just using Iowa as a stepping stone until given a better offer.

My point is high school talent often times doesn't pan out to meet expectations (see point guard and starting center).

Our 2 highest ranked recruits red shirted this year. I really wish I knew more about how they were doing. I'm already excited for the PTL.

I think this is a good learning experience for Ellingson and Fleming. These two should be pretty hungry coming into next year..I really hope it works out for these guys. ....We will need them for sure

So many minutes available...I can't imagine anyone transferring going into next year. I won't be surprised if 1 or 2 leave after 1st semester or at the end of the season. Keep in mind these guys didn't become D-1 players because they lack confidence. Some fans may have given up on them but I doubt they have given up on themselves.

This thread seems to mirror what posters were saying about Clemons a year ago; thank goodness he stayed regardless of what everyone was speculating and/or hoping at the time.

Why not just quit eating our own and let this take its course. Personally, I would rather see any player targeted by a message board prove all the pseudo experts wrong.

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying the incoming talent won't be great I am just saying we won't know until they take the floor. I am really hoping they are as good as some think they will be. Oh for a dynamic point guard who can shake and bake.

We are losing a lot of size so there is definitely a concern there.

Overall, we really are losing size at 1 position, and that position gets blasted on here for not being a scoring threat. Our length and size will be more or the same at the 1-4. Though I agree, I'd like to see 1 true Big or a big bodied 4 for certain matchups. I could see Wagner gaining more size and strength and playing a hybrid 4/5 role.

clemmons could always play D, it was the rest of his game
Brady will have to compete with Bohannon, Moss, Flemming, Christian, Jok, Baer, and others. I see a step down in competition being the best thing for him. The competition at off guard will be brutal. As for center I believe one or two of the incoming freshman willl jump right in. I see the Hawks as a faster team next year and doing much more pressing. One could argue the second team is playing better than the starters.

Brady was hurt most of last year and hasn't really tried to do much within the offense. I like that he has not made a bunch of mistakes and is likely still adjusting to playing big boy ball. Jok wasn't great last year, and now he is one of the best outside shooters in the conference. Is it too hard to believe Ellingson couldn't make similar improvements?

In high school he was clutch, if I remember correctly, he made some last second 3pt shots to win some state titles. You can't teach that, and I want player like that on the team.

I'm confident Fran could find a better use of the scholarship so I hope it opens up.

I had originally hoped it would go to Baer and I'd still be fine with that but part of me wants to be selfish and keep a scholly open and try to bring in a new recruit to uplift talent.

I am still somewhat excited to see what Flemming can do... Thought all along he should have been playing ahead of Brady. Turns out I was probably wrong and it should have been Williams but I'm still confident Flemming/Hutton/Moss... Really any of our other guys have more upside than Brady.

I remember the threads about Jok...can't play defense, etc. Jok did nothing as a freshman and had no idea how to guard anyone. He put on some muscle this year and plays pretty good defense. I'm not going to jump to the conclusion that Ellingson can't play, shoot, etc. just yet.

I think either ellingson or Fleming transfer at some point in their careers. I doubt they do it this year though with plenty of guard minutes up for grabs next season.

D1 athletes are proud and competitive and I'm sure moss Hutton ellingson and Fleming all expect to replace Gesell and Clemmons next year
