Elam Ending For NCAA Basketball

I’ve said it a million times on this board how much I hate intentional fouling making the last 5 minutes of a basketball game take a half hour. It’s time to use the Elam ending in college basketball.

—Normal game clock and shot clock for the first three quarters.

—At the start of the 4th quarter the game clock is turned off and the target score to win the game is the leading team’s score +25.

—During the Elam ending quarter, if the offensive team is in the bonus and the defensive team commits a non-shooting foul the offensive team gets one free throw plus possession. This would prevent defenses from fouling when the defense could hit the target score with a FT or two pointer but the offense could win with a 3 pointer.

I’m dead serious. Basketball games suck in the last 5 minutes.

This is what has to happen. I'm pretty meh on basketball. I typically don't watch it. If this was in place, I'd probably watch just the last quarter. It would make the close games amazing. Nothing phony, just play and score until the game is over. When teams only defense is to foul as fast as they can, and the other team's only offense is to play keep away, they're not playing the game they started. Why finish a game playing a different game? Football still plays football. You can't commit penalties to extend the game because they have a time run off. You play football until the end. In baseball, there isn't an end of the game strategy because there isn't a clock. The Elam ending has to happen.

I watch less and less basketball every year because of it. I can’t make myself sit for two hours watching a game develop just to have it get ruined every time it’s a close, good game.

It’s either a blow out and then there’s no fouling but it’s boring, or it’s a close game that gets ruined by a bunch of fouling dragging the game out for an extra half hour.

No thanks. You can keep it. Football and baseball might be boring in certain ways by themselves, but at least they don’t have a bunch of pointless theatrical bullshit at the end of every good game that’s never worked anyway n

Baby steps

The men’s game needs to copy the women’s game and go to quarters. They do that and that is a start.

NIT and all these preseason tournaments automatically should be using the Elam Ending, just to see what it looks like. Similar to MLB, using Triple-A, to experiment with an automated system calling balls and strikes.

You don’t need to make drastic changes overnight, but realize sports is an entertainment product and be forward thinking about all this.

Won’t really stop the fouling though.

You could put a rule in that says on defensive fouls with say under 4:00 remaining the offense gets one free throw plus possession, but I think the Elam would be more fast paced and exciting. It’s basically a race to score 25 points.

I also think the Elam might draw some folks who typically don’t watch basketball like @99topdawg because it’s a new thing.

DVR and speeding through ads saves headaches. Well, some of them…
I watch every Iowa FB game the next morning on DVR and it’s great. I hit skip ahead three times on YouTube tv immediately after the whistle and that’s right at the next snap 99% of the time. It’s really nice to do that after you go to a game in person because then you have both perspectives. There’s stuff you don’t see watching it in person, and lots of stuff you see in person that you don’t get on tv. Speeding through halftime is joyous.

Funny DVR story…

If I can’t watch a game live on TV I shut my phone notifications off, tell my buddies not to text me, and I try to avoid TVs wherever I’m at.

A few years ago I had to make a Sioux City run with the gf and we were playing Iowa State. Went to Sam’s right before going home and I had made it through almost the whole game with no one saying anything. The greeter guy at the Sioux City Sam’s club is a big Hawk fan and he’s seen me walk in enough with Iowa gear that he always gives me a Go Hawks like any good fan would. Anyway, I had just gotten done telling my gf that I had made it through the game without any spoilers when we walk through the door and greeter guy looks at me and says, “We just scored! Hawks are up 3!” (or whatever the score was, don’t remember. Couldn’t get mad at the guy.

The NFL and maybe the UFC understand that sports are entertainment. All the other sports in this country want to acquiesce to the purist and it takes forever for them to evolve.

In theory I agree with you. I just don’t think it will happen over night.
