Eastern Illinois

"When I talked with an opposing coach before a game and he mentions the pink walls, I know I've got him. I can't recall a coach who has stirred up a fuss about the color and then beat us.â€￾ - Hayden Fry

With a new season looming just over the horizon, we take a look at what is sure to be the first of many nerve-wracking games for the Iowa Hawkeyes: Eastern Illinois. The Panthers finished last season with a respectable 8-4 record, losing in the first round of the FCS playoffs (it must be nice having playoffs).
They enter the 2010 season ranked #18 in the FCS and geared up as they have had just as many months to prepare for Iowa as we have for them. Head Coach Bob Spoo, who returns for his 23rd season at Eastern Illinois with a record of 140-113-1, is sure to have his boys fired up for their first ever meeting with the Hawkeyes in Iowa City in two weeks. The good news, for Iowa fans anyway, is that just this week Coach Spoo dismissed three of his leading players from the team for violating undisclosed team rules.
Senior running back Chevon Walker, senior defensive end Colin Luczynski, and junior offensive lineman Eric Rettke were all kicked off the team on Thursday, August 12th. This will leave some considerable holes to fill for the Panthers, but if we haven’t learned anything from the Northern Iowa game last year, then we are doomed to (and deserve to) repeat it. However, I believe that this game will be less of a headache than we worry about, even with so many fresh faces on the offensive line for Iowa. Look for it to be close in the first half, and Iowa to pull away late. Although, I foresee mental errors on Iowa’s part keeping the Panthers in the game longer than they should be. Let’s hope the coaching staff beats the false starts and holds out of those new linemen early.
I believe the score won’t be a blowout like Penn State did to them last year (52-3). Look for something in the neighborhood of 35-10. The only way to progress towards a Big Ten Title is to get progressively better…and to find where I put that lucky rabbit’s foot.

These guys are NOT nearly as good as UNI was last season. EIU plays in one of the weakest FCS Conferences (OVC). That league hasn't won a playoff game in a very long time. The Hawks will put up at least 42 points and should hold EIU to one score. As long as we win, I don't care what the margin of victory is. Just pray for no injuries!

I don't think Iowa is counting their blessings now that these three players were kicked off their team. Both teams are going to play hard, Iowa's just waaaaay to good. Eastern could have Tony Romo back for this game and Iowa would still beat them by two TD's. The previous poster was right, Northern Iowa's team from last year was a lot better than this Eastern Illinois team. It'll be a warm up, starters will play a half, Go Hawks!

I'm not saying they are amazing, but Iowa will not be 100% either. Injuries and being so early in the season I am not so naive to say Iowa will perform like they did in January. It just doesn't work that way. I do agree it will be a good win, but just don't get too cocky. Iowa can beat themselves just as easily no matter WHO they play.

I just want the W and some good quality time for our backups this season. Never had that chance last year.

The Eastern Illinois game is a tune up. The issue isn't whether Iowa will win or not, its how they will play. The defense should dominate with no trouble. No long runs or sustained drives. Lots of 3 an outs. Sacks, pressure and runs stalled at the line of scrimmage should all be there.

The major questions going into the season are the offensive line and Ricky Stanzi. For the offense there should be minimal 3 and outs. long sustained drives. High completion average/no INTs and at least one back near 100 yards.

The good news, for Iowa fans anyway, is that just this week Coach Spoo dismissed three of his leading players from the team for violating undisclosed team rules.

THIS IS GREAT NEWS!!! Spoo with the big Coup!!! I will sleep soooo much better tonight

Let's see, if all college football players (other than the Iowa Hawkeyes) were suspended, or broke a femur, or couldn't find the playing field on game day......(sorry, couldn't resist)

I see Hawkeyes winning by a final score of 41-10 defense taking charge and running game having a big day as well as DJK and McNutt big days.

We will have two players suspended, one maybe out (Tarp) and another in limbo (BW). As noted earlier, it's not what Eastern Illannoy brings, it's how the Hawks perform. Kicking game, running back and O-line will be the focus for Iowa.
