East Vs West

In the 8 seasons post Legends/Leaders, the East has won 8 consecutive BT Championships.

Each season, the East typically wins one more game than the West in intra-divisional contests.

In the past 8 years, the East enjoys a 77-70 advantage.

In the regular season, the East holds a slim 40-37 advantage.

3 times, the East-west series has ended in a 7-7 tie.

3 times, the East had a 11-10 edge.

Once, the West had a 11-10 edge.

In 2017, the East had a 13-8 edge.

So, ???

Now we can watch as the boo birds will only refer to the East’s wins in the championship game. Shock.

In the meantime…2014-2021, Ohio State, 5 wins. 1 each for PSU, Michigan, and Michigan State. Closest Championship game, MSU, 16, Iowa 13.

The records are skewed because the East is so top heavy. Right now Michigan and Ohio State are head and shoulders above the rest of the conference. The West is full of a bunch of middle of the road teams.

it will be interesting to see how the divisions look once USC and UCLA join.

West is bad friends. Even IL succumbed to a half suspended, pathetic, MSU team. And IL is likely going to the btc as the other west teams are worse. And don't even mention NW or Nebby.

They'll move Michigan and Penn St. to the West. And out the CA teams in the East. Cause that makes sense.
They'll stop referring to cardinal directions or regions and come up with something they yhey think sounds cool and try to foist on us like "Leaders" and "Legends".

Michigan and Ohio State need to play every year. So unless they did that stupid protected rivalry thing again they need to be in the same division.

I hope they keep it East & West, I enjoy Iowa playing the border teams around Iowa every year. I think they should put Purdue in the East and add those 2 teams to the West.

But, OTOH, they probably are not done expanding.

Big Ten will keep east-west divisions one more year in 2023 but will probably completely scrap divisions in 2024 when USC and UCLA join.

The Big Ten in 2024 will probably go with a schedule where you have 3 protected rivals and then play the other 12 teams 50% of the time. Iowa's 3 protected rivals will probably be Minn, Wisc and Neb.

They will get rid of the Division nonsense.

That way Ohio State and Michigan can play in the Championship game if they finish one and two in the regular season standings (The Big 12 does it that way).

Iowa will contend for bowl game slots, but It is going to be incredibly difficult to qualify for the Big Ten Championship game.

After the big 8 and Pac-12 fall apart next year the whole thing is going to get uprooted anyway. The best teams will scramble to the B1G and SEC as super conferences with NFL-style pods, and the remaining dogshit teams like ISU and Boston College, yadda yadda will drop off to G5 status. The ACC might hang on. Playoffs will get expanded so that conference affiliation doesn't really matter anyway aside from TV money and marquee matchups.

Gonna be hilarious to watch construction crews haul seats out of Trice a la NASCAR because people don't want to watch the clowns lose to James Madison and UMass

I hope this doesn't happen, the Big Ten doesn't need the championship game to be a Ohio State vs Michigan rematch every year. I get how 1 sided the BTC has been but that's mostly because of Ohio State and they are always going to be the top of the Big Ten, always has and always will be. At least now the BTC feels like it means something with the West champion facing the East champion, take that away and it's just an additional conference game.

Hopefully they will use this as divisions:

East
Ohio State
Michigan
PSU
Michigan State
Rutgers
Indiana
Maryland
Purdue

West
Iowa
UCLA
Southern Cal
Nebraska
Minnesota
Illinois
Northwestern
Wisconsin

Play 7 games in division and 2 cross overs per year. If 2 additional teams from the west join then add them to the West division then slide Illinois and Northwestern over. If they were to add Oregon to the west then the strength of both divisions starts to even out, although Ohio State still remains the team to beat.

Under your scenario, Iowa's Big Ten slate could theoretically be:

Oregon
Washington
UCLA
USC
Nebraska
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Rutgers
Maryland

What an absolute dogshit college football season that would be. I hope we never see it.

Why would you put Rutgers and Maryland in the West?

It would be:
Oregon
Washington
UCLA
USC
Nebraska
Iowa
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Northwestern or Illinois (with the other moved to the East, I'd say Illinois).

I don't see this as being a "dogshit" season at all. I would love seeing Iowa face a team like USC in Kinnick on a chilly November day. If you want to see "dogshit" season just look at Iowa's home schedule for next year.

You gonna get seasons again?

If they keep prices the same or raise them for mobile passes I’m gonna have to think about it long and hard. It’s about 80 hours of driving total for the season for us.

What we might do is keep our tailgate spot ($175 apiece for us), go to maybe 2-3 games on the cheap from StubHub. I also have wrestling season tickets, and fewer Kinnick trips would mean I wouldn’t feel so bad about going to wrestling duals. The nice thing about last minute football is you can decide once you know about the weather. It’s usually pretty easy to scalp two tickets and we’d still have our tailgate spot to hang out at.

My goodness. This makes all kinds of sense. I am 100% in agreement. Now, watch the BT powers F it up.

If my son goes back out for the HMB then, yes, I will be renewing. If he doesn't then I've got a difficult decision. Personally I want too, I LOVE being in Kinnick, but here I sit with 3 tickets to the game against Wisconsin and I'm having problems finding 2 family members that want to go with me because it's only going to be a high of 30 (I know...I know...sigh).

BTW, I'm looking for a cheap generator. I'm thinking a crock pot of hot chili would be perfect for a tailgate. Get some hot chocolate for the kids and hot coffee me and we would all be plenty of warm before the game. What are your tailgating food plans?

I was under the impression that in your scenario there would be two crossover games with teams from the east, hence my use of "theoretically" because we could have a season where we only play 2 legacy Big Ten teams.

Sure, it would be nice to play USC on a cold day at Kinnick every once in awhile, but frankly I'd rather play Ohio or Michigan on a cold day at Kinnick. The last time we played USC it was a blood bath and I don't want the fans getting bored.

Don't get a generator. Get one of those single burner gas stoves that uses the little tanks. Put your chili in a nice dutch oven and roll from there. A generator kicks off exhaust and is loud as shit. You don't need that at your tailgate.

I have a portable Weber gas grill and it's honestly been the best thing ever for tailgating. It'll run just below 200* and goes up to 500*+ even below zero air temp.

This one... Weber Q Series

The grate is ceramic cast iron and splits into 2 halves, they sell a replacement half that's a flat cast iron griddle and I use it all the time. Normally I do breakfast sandwiches on the griddle early in the morning, and either brats or philly cheese steaks before the game if it's an afternoon or evening game. Probably phillies again this weekend.

I looked into generators a couple years ago, and anything quiet enough for camping or tailgating is going to be over a grand. A grill like the one I mentioned runs off those 1 lb camping tanks and would do a good job with a cheap cast iron dutch oven from Walmart. And you could also use it for a ton of other stuff.

During the off season I use it all the time when I want to blast grilled shrimp but don't want to waste charcoal for 2 minutes' use. Very handy.
