Earning the QB job

I know the QB uncertainty is worrisome, but have faith...in fact, I think this "season of the unknown" may be one of those great ones that nobody saw coming!
Of course not talking 12-0 type of season, but if we catch a break or two and the AIRBHG stays far-far away I really think 9-3 is doable.

Man it's hot...
Sure, I'll have another glass of that oh-so-refreshing preseason drink.
"OH YEAHHH!!!"

I'm definitely concerned, but hoping that our defense and run game will help take pressure of a young quarterback. I also think Ken O'Keefe will help immensely in prepping both quarterbacks to succeed under the current system. As we have seen for years, the system does not ask much of the quarterback. Let's hope this does not change.

Although, in time, our starting quarterback will be asked to do more than just run the offense. Teams will do what they always do and force him to make throws and put pressure on him. Testing the deep threat and utilization of the tight end will be key.

Maybe I will be wrong about this, but with two 4* QB's vying for the job, I think we have a good QB in 2017. Yeah, there will be an experience/learning curve. And, clearly, we need receivers to step up; pass pro needs improvement. But, lots of teams with 4* inexperienced QB's produce good offense. If the run game takes the pressure off of the starter early, which I think will happen, our QB will have a good year.

I am hoping for a clear starter to emerge before the first game. This team is returning a lot of the key pieces that are required for successful season. There is a lot of change going on in the program and a QB controversy could be the factor that sinks the entire season. QB controversies during the Ferentz era have always, at a minimum, resulted in missing what was attainable. First year starters have had the best win/loss records of their Hawkeye careers, for a variety of reasons, the season they start from the git go.

Whoever finally gets picked, and I believe it will ultimately be Stanley, their success/lack thereof will be far more dependent on the development of the almost completely unproven receiving corps. If the receiving corps can produce simply on the level of 2015, I don't think 8-9 wins is out of the question.

Defensively, what concerns me is the unproven depth. I will happily take our starting 11 against any offense in the Big 10 and expect them to hold their own. DT reserves and the secondary reserves are where my concerns are there. I am confident in Bazata/Lattimore and Rugamba/Ojemudia/Jackson to hold their own at their positions.

I don't think there should be any controversy over who starts. We haven't seen enough of any of the QB's in game action, practice, or spring game to have a favorite. it.

And why didn't we see any QBs in most of the 4th qtr in last years blowout bowl game. Stanley could have gotten some meaningful minutes against a very good defense in that game.

KF missed a chance to not only nearly kill CJB but give Stanley a look. He could have thrown a lot of passes, made his reads, made his mistakes, made good decisions and plays, gotten game time tape on him. KF is just not very good at looking at backups in some spot play during games, he never has been. Just look at how well Gair played, I think it was Gair, for Miles Taylor. Gair was on the bench his whole career and had talent it seems.

Look at what historically happened when the last two "close QB battles" announcements were made. The newly demoted QB transferred.

The longer they keep this under wraps, regardless of if they've already made the decision, is better for the program. That's how this will play out.

Stanley and Weigers have both shown they can throw the ball...especially Stanley IMO. I expect him to win the job. For a freshman to come in and beat out a redshirt sophomore who had been in the system for two years...well..that says something. I think Stanley's a gamer too...he didn't look intimidated coming into the NDSU game when CJ went down. The good news is that with our experience on the OL, if they can protect, he'll be able to exploit teams that will inevitably blitz us. It's going to be the norm again this year.

I'm more worried about who the QB's are throwing to on the outside. If Vandenburg comes back, that alleviates the possession guy worry, but we need a deep threat. Young and Falconer need to step up. They supposedly have speed.

I'm not too worried about QB those two guys can play. It's more about getting the offense put together by mid-August
Which seems to be the case almost every year that they struggle with the O the first few games. BF may not tweak the O a ton but I’m sure he’ll want to put his stamp on it. So between that and new QB/WRs there’ll be growing pains with the passing game I don’t see any way around it maybe most of season. The question is how dominating can the Oline be and the running game to offset that….

A dominant O Line covers a lot of weaknesses, no doubt. If an offense has the luxury of knowing they can run for 4-7 on demand, it's a great security blanket.

Any play action passing game at all should make them tough to game plan for. If you can break TEs up the seams and on corner routes on play action when safeties and LBs are all biting on play fakes that should lead to some big plays. I thought GD did a terrible job at what I call setting up plays. You can run a lot of different plays from the same formations but you also have to not be predictable be it the down and distance or game situation so much. 2nd and 8 can’t be an automatic passing down. And 1st and 10 can’t be an automatic running down (as tempting as that’ll be) I’ll be fascinated with how BF calls games this year. Because how much of that will be him wanting to implament his style and how much will it be him playing to the personel in which he’ll have…

Butler and Wadley in the same backfield could open up some killer screen plays, if KF will allow BF some flexibility.
