Earning the QB job

So a thought occured to me, Brian Ferentz is going to have a problem when he announces which QB has earned the starting QB job in the fall.

How is BF going to tell his QB's that no jobs are just given at Iowa and you have to earn them?

I see what you did there... One is still going to have to beat out the other regardless of their level of play so there's your smart a$$ reply before someone beats me to it.

What is the expected timeframe for when they name a starter?

It's going to go down like this. He won't announce a starter until right before the first start so the young QB's push each other. The first start won't be a guarantee but a trial for the guy to earn the job. KF or BF will hope that one pulls ahead of the other.

Let's just hope this doesn't turn into a Rudock Beathard situation like three years ago when they didn't even know who earned the starting job going into the bowl game!

KF has a Hx of not managing these close QB battles well and picking a starter. Jake Christensen and Ricky Stanzi was another situation they had the wrong guy under center. Stanzi came in and commanded the offense very well and earned it.

Yeah I don't want to see a back and forth situation at all...
Unfortunately the play of whomever is in there will largely dictate that. How much patience will BF have with whomever he throws out there and the fan base? I have a bad feeling no matter how he handles it he’ll have some loud critics. All we can hope for is some good play.

Think about this if CJ hadn’t done what he did the year before and was a 1st yr new starter instead how long of a leash would he have had playing how he did last year? Glad we didn’t have to find that out either.

As bad of a year as we sort of expect to see from whichever QB ends up playing do we or don't we expect to see an improvement over last years passing game? For them to have a better season and get to 8 wins or better it can't be just the Wadley show.

I don't think there should be any controversy over who starts. We haven't seen enough of any of the QB's in game action, practice, or spring game to have a favorite. We also don't have an incumbent this year that is on shaky ground the way we did in 2008 and 2015 (before the Rudock transfer). Although the spring game looked less than encouraging (when does it ever?, I do feel like there is somewhat of a baseline as to what to expect out of whoever ends up getting the nod. Here are the stats of the QB's as 1st year starters starting in 2002. I removed the upper extreme (Brad Banks) and the lower extreme (Jake Christensen).

I feel like we can expect whoever plays to complete about 60% of his passes give or take a percentage point or two. I also think we can expect close to 20 TD's with a low double digit interception total. The quarterback will probably also average around 7.5 yards per attempt. If you want to factor in our receiving corp being subpar, I see Iowa's QB putting up numbers close to Jake Rudock in 2013. I expect QB to be steady, but less than spectacular in 2017 and the team will go as far as the running game, defense, and special teams can take it.

I hope they make the choice based on how they do in a game, not just practice. I'm sure Christensen and Rudock both looked great in practice. Please spare me, " the coaches watch these guys every day, they know more than the fans." There are gamers, and there are practice field Heisman winners. Let 'em both play.

BF knows who butters his bread. Stubbornness can be hereditary. My kids remind me daily.

No way he's waiting that long. KF is already on record saying he doesn't want a repeat of 2008. He's stated that he expects a starter will be made after about a week into fall camp.

I hadn't heard that. Well we'll see if he does and if/how long it sticks. I really hope that's how it plays out.

Okay, now I get it. You guys really won;t like this, but I think the answer this fall is obvious. BF suits up with a mustache disguise and lines up under center against Wyoming and plays quarterback until someone at the NCAA figures out what is going on and pulls him out of the game....

Hope you're right, but, we will see. I think a lot of that depends on if one really pulls ahead of the other. If not, I don't think KF would go all in and name a starter. As it should be, this is on the QB who can pull ahead.

I think KF learned from the Christensen situation. I think KF had a certain loyality to his Christensen's father and making JC the starter. I think KF learned from that to go with the better player. I think Rudock and Beathard were so close and both starter-worthy so was a difficult decision. I don't envy coaches having to select that one position at times, when it is a close battle. All eyes are on.

The JC thing was a head scratcher. To those on the outside looking in it was tough to understand how he got such a long leash. Maybe he just thought Stanzi wasn't anywhere near ready either and it just took the bottom falling out like it did for him to pull the trigger. If there was more to it I sure hope it wasn't JCs Dad... I can't see KF bending to any pressure of that nature. He probably wouldn't have taken on the Lavar Ball family just for that reason..
I agree on JR and CJ. They were obviously pretty close. There'd have been second guessing there too regardless of the decision made I bet.

Rudock vs. Beathard in hindsight it is easier to see why Rudock was starting even though Beathard was more talented and pretty smart himself.

Rudock is simply liked by coaches where ever he goes. At Michigan he started over other QB's with more talent. With the NFL Lions he not only made the roster but niw has made it to 2nd string. Coaches just plain like him.
