Early Iowa/ISU line (ISU-2)

Interesting. If we are healthy (as opposed to our 2 best OL being out vs NDSU), I think that even though I am not a gambler... I might take that bet.

No Montgomery, No Hakeem Butler. I will stand by my assertion that both OL and DL are better than ISU’s. ISU fans probably think otherwise. Let them. They get the previous week off to prepare. At Jack Trice. No excuses this time ... unless they lose.

If Iowa can find one good DT, look out! Though I'm not sure if Lattimore will ever come around, I think Reiff will have a great senior year. He's your typical whi...I mean'midwestern' high motor guy. Having a good DT will free up the DE's.

Both teams are widely predicted to be preseason Top 25 or close thereto. Toss up game with -3 points going to the home team, but with a slight deduction because the away team having a good contingent of the crowd. -2

If it wasn't for needing to break knee caps, I could have been a bookie!

Not a surprising line as this game is usually a toss up. I do think ISU fans are in for a rude awakening with Purdy now that the best RB and WR in school history are no longer on the roster.

We see this show every year, the clown QB is the best to ever suit up in the McDonald's ketchup and mustard. By a game, or two after the Iowa game they have a different QB, who looks great against the lame ass defenses in the Big 12. Then it is the old lament; "if we would have had Billy Joe Trailerpark against Iowa we would have won." Rinse/Repeat.

We see this sort of claim every year from Ames, but this year it is coming from Athlon, USA Today, and sports books.

I think a 3-3-5 is the worst defense to play against Iowa. I credit Campbell for moving to it because it really messes with the spread wacky teams of the Big 12, but it creates a bad mismatch against Iowa. ISU can beat Iowa, but it would involve a couple turnover level miscues and Campbell coaching at a high level. I’ll gladly take the 2.

I watched a video of AJ highlights and got all sorts of pumped for the season. He seriously might be the best rush Dend in the entire nation next year. If our defense is decent at stopping the run, the opposing QBs are in for a world of hurt.

Iowa will run about 2/3 of the time and just grind it out. Our new Center will get a test in dealing with a loud hostile crowd. Nate Stanley been there before and down and brought us back. Can do again. Will never forget after last game there with KF on post game saying BF was probably up in the press box smoking a cigar after that second half.

Well...I understand their new mobile QB may create some issues for us...but it's important to realize that their offense could do nothing against our defense last year...that was with Butler and Montgomery. Now, you could say losing Matt Nelson, Hesse, Hooker, and Anthony Nelson is going to be a negative...but AJ playing more snaps and Golston playing more snaps is a net positive. It all depends on the DTs. I think we are better there too...with Lattimore, Reiff, Nixon, and Shannon...a mix of experience and youth.

The other thing to consider is that we had not yet moved to the CASH defense which will also help against a team like ISU that likes to spread you out...and get mismatches. One last thing to consider is that we had youth at corner and linebacker last year...now those positions are deep and have experience.

I know it's in L'ames...but once this defense settles in...I just don't see ISU having consistent success. That bodes well for an Iowa win in Jack Trice.

I feel that -2 is pretty much right on; toss up really. ISU is due for a win in the series and I'm sure the Hawks offense will come out flat like every other year. Also, we have trouble with mobile QB's like Purdy. Hopefully AJ & company can get to him early and get him rattled.

If you look at Purdy's numbers in the last 4 games of the season (once there was some tape on him) his numbers were very pedestrian. He threw more INT's than TD's and his rushing yards went down. If you watch tape on him you will see that a lot of his yards and TD's were literally him chucking it downfield to Butler who then made a play on the ball. It's not like Purdy was throwing darts and dropping in perfect passes. He also won't have the safety net of Montgomery. Their freshmen RB duo will be good in time I have no doubt but not by the second game of the season. Neither of them will break tackles or block like Montgomery did.
