Duzey Blows Out a Knee?

Hearing news from Twitter and TOS that Jake Duzey has blown out a need. I don't have any sort of confirmation, but that's the word on the street today.

This would NOT be good. Duzey is one of the few guys on the team who has proven that they can perform. Not good at all.

IMO, none of the TE's really stepped up or stood out last year. Was it the QB, playcalling or lack of ability to get separation. None seemed to take the bull by the horns. They should at least match what they did last year with their group, but this was a chance for him to set himself apart from the rest.

I bolded the part above because in the first few games last year I saw quite a few combo routes where Duzey and hamilton or 2 TEs might run through the same route and one would break it off and another would go deep. I saw hamilton and other TEs wide open on the deep route but JR was always throwing underneath. I am not piling on JR but in 2013 he loved to throw those 20-30 yard sideline routes between the Dee backs. Last year not so much.

I hope this is not true about Duzey. I think he had a red jersey on at Valley scrimmage and never want to see a young guy get hurt.

I felt bad for Hamilton last year because he seemed to be open far more than he was targeted. I think he only had one regular season TD pass.

Indirectly...yes. Remember, GD managed to take a QB with a 25/7 TD/INT ratio and absolutely destroy his production (7/8 TD/INT ratio the next year)

Drummer, I don't typically agree with you, but on this one... You nailed it. I'd add 3000+ yds dropped to 2200 yds. IMO, JR gets a raw deal from tavernhok fans who don't know sheet; but without a doubt JVB got screwed big time.

This is a typical case of mis-using stats. I think you need to show the stats on a game by game basis for the 3000 yd year. There was some major compilation against some really bad teams and added productivity by having McNutt to throw to. I can recall the game against a really bad Indiana team where McNutt accounted for 4 TDs and a bunch of yards. He racked up a bunch of stats in the PITT comeback who I think was 6-6 that year. There were a couple of stinkers in there including at Nebraska. I recall trailing MSU at home big and making a large garbage time rally which included a phenomenal one handed McNutt catch on a ball thrown behind him by JVB. That ball should have been incomplete but it shows up in the stat book for JVB.

If it was all Davis, then why was that a 7 win team the year before? Why did JVB not make it out of the first week or two of NFL camps in Minnesota or was Davis also doing double duty by running the offense up there?

Davis may not be great or the answer but how about looking at the overall talent and experience level around JVB that next year? Not too mention losing McNutt and then Schreff & Donnal along with having to go to the walk on fullback as our tailback.

Personally I think KOK saw the writing on the wall of where this program was heading based on the shoddy leadership from the top and got the heck out of dodge.

82, I believe Duzey is the kid that was wide open around the 10 yard line against ISU that JR saw, started to throw to, then clutched and threw a horrible (incomplete) pass to a receiver underneath. This caused us that game as that was 3rd down and we kicked a tying fg instead of going up by 4. This allowed ISU to drive for a winning fg instead of having to score a td to win.

Hamilton and T. Smith are the two receivers I saw the most frustration from with JR and the most enthusiasm with CJ.

I think he clearly left the practice and another guy stepped in for the reps. Any questions about specifics are going straight into the mysterious depths of Fort Kinnick until fall practice. Duzey is a desperately needed contributor and would be a huge loss.

Our use of tight ends as receivers has dropped considerably since Greg Davis arrived. Greg Davis seems to prefer using wide receivers with quick outs and to let them get yards after catch while KOK would use tight ends in the seam for 8-15 yard gains. I prefer throwing to the guy who's open and has the yards behind him already. The Greg Davis/Kirk Ferentz offensive philosophy of no turnovers no matter how much it costs us is just not a viable offense. I think KF is so afraid of a turnover that he doesn't realize the ultra conservative offense turns it over via the punt. The result is the same. If he opened up the offense we'd at least have a chance to get a few touchdowns while settling for no offense we get to enjoy watching two punters get nearly the same yardage combined as what Reggie Roby did himself. R.I.P. Reggie.

Yes I remember that play and there were many like it. Not sure if what Duzey.

And I totally agree with you Arvada that Hamilton and Smith were very frustrated last year. Hamilton would be open and not get the ball as was T Smith and a lot of throws went to KMM. Maybe JR worked out a lot extra with KMM and liked that KMM would catch first and many times go to the ground just to make sure of the completion (even though KMM dropped his share).
