Wasn't the reason Alex Karras wasn't in the HOF because of his gambling habits.

Karras admitted placing bets on NFL games and was suspended by the league, along with Green Bay Packers' running back Paul Hornung, for one season (1963).
Upon returning to action in 1964, Karras once refused when an official asked him to call the pregame coin toss. "I'm sorry, sir," Karras replied. "I'm not permitted to gamble."
One of the most infamous chapters in Detroit sports history involved Alex Karras--defensive lineman for the Detroit Lions--and William Franklin Afflis--AKA wrestler Dick the Bruiser. What started out as a publicity stunt to promote a professional wrestling match between Karras and the Bruiser became a full-blown brawl at the original Lindell Bar on Cass and Bagley Avenues.

Evy made him spend an entire summer in Spencer Iowa or something to hide him from other schools finding him and recruiting him

When you read some of the historical stuff, it really makes one wonder about Evy. By all accounts, many of his recruiting "tactics" were later clamped down on--by him!--when he became AD. Speculation even ran to him turning in Ray Nagel on one occasion. In the end, he left a bad taste for many by the time he retired/resigned as AD.
At the same time, the fans around the state rallied around Nagel when he was fired, although Nagel did leave following the next season. In the days since, Evy is definitely revered as coach, reviled as AD.

You thought I was a clones fan lol . More Iowa fans should read about the history of Iowa football under Evy if they aren’t familiar. Why we quit playing Norte Dame under Evy is a really good read .

Evy's history is very interesting, to say the least. In the 75 Years.., and 25 More Years...books, Evy is pretty much the only coach who detailed his best players at each position. As a coach he gave incredible attention to detail. As an AD he, seemingly, became quite petty, and almost resentful. Part of that may be the fact he couldn't hold both HC and AD posts.

It's interesting that as gambling on sports is more available for fans, some of the previously held thoughts on players who gambled are softening. May not be enough for Pete Rose though.
