Duhawk Open Brackets

Hey guys, I just got back from the tourney a little bit ago. Overall not too bad today. Sebert didn't fair too well and got a pretty big gash below the eye. Foxen won a match or two but did not place. I believe that Gilmor ended up in 5th if I'm not mistaken and looked alright. Other than that I think that most everyone made the finals.

Ramos looked a little off in the semis but fought back hard and put up a big win in the finals. Tony is very good from his feet and if he can keep improving he will make a splash in the next couple of years.

Carew didn't have the best finals match but had a very good day overall. In his 2nd match of the day the kid went back on him when Carew was on top and he knocked his head hard. He was unconcious for a little while and has a big gash above his lip. He fought through it though and really wasn't in trouble all day. Don't forget about Dylan as he is a very tough wrestler and will be in the hunt for the starting spot for the next four years.

Lofthouse cruised up until the finals. He is so explosive when he is moving his feet and setting up shots. He looked like he was in a different league for most of the day. In the finals Jordan from WI counter wrestled the entire match. He didn't really produce any of his own offense. He just countered Ethan and scored from there. Ethan should get the best of him next time.

Lira looked good and lost a tough 10-9 decision in the finals. He was out to an early 5-0 nothing lead but got a little flat footed late in the match and lost a tough battle. Lira is improving though and is a good kid to have in the room.

Ambrose was the most impressive guy that was there today, IMHO. He looked great and was really firing off some great shots and dominated the field. I thought that the highly touted Borlie from Wisconsin would give him some trouble in the finals but Brodie dominated the match from start to finish and I think took Borlie down 5 times in an easy victory.

Rasing looked really good today too and had 3 first period pins before the finals I believe. He wrestled Nelson from MN in the finals who is probably the gophers future HWT and controlled the match. Nelson is a pretty talented wrestler but Blake controlled the match. Blake needs to learn to not wrestle sloppy some times against lesser opponents but if he can stay consistent and wrestle tough he is going to be awfully good.

All in all a good day but not a lot of top notch competition. If you guys have any other questions just let me know...

Could you expand a little more on Ramos? I know Brands said he expects 125 - 141 to be filled by a combination of Ramos, Moore, and McDonough. Is Ramos ready to step in at 125 next year and AA?

Also why no St. John at the open?

St John is a little nicked up and that is why he wasn't there yesterday.

It is kind of hard to gauge too much on Ramos yet as he didn't face great competition yesterday and I wasn't able to get to grandview. He is definitely good on his feet and will be able to take most anyone down. However, I would like to see more of him on the mat before I make too many judgements. He does look good in practice but I'd like to see more matches. If he is the man next year then I think that I'd feel pretty comfortable with that and I think that he could fair well. However, I don't expect to see him in the lineup quite yet. If McDonough does decide to move up next year then I still think that Tyler Clark has the upper hand at 125.

Looks like Cruise Aarhus (UNI and Cedar Rapids Kennedy) had a good tournament. Watched him throughout his high school career. Since he was a career 103 pounder in high school, he must be finally growing into a 25 pounder's body.

U of I website has Rasing placing second, so they must have read the incorrect brackets also. No Joey Slayton sightings? Not in Utah or at the Duhawk. What's up with that?

Aarhus is still a little skinny but he has grown a little bit and is a decent 25 pounder these days. He looked pretty good this weekend and didn't have much trouble winning the tourney.

The website is definitely wrong and most likely read the brackets which were posted on the internet wrong. I was there standing about 4 feet from the mat and Rasing definitely won and I believe by 3 or 4 points.

I don't know how many more times that we have to rehash this but Joe Slaton is not eligible to wrestle for the University of Iowa. There was 0 chance that the team was going to take him to Utah and he would have had to pay his own way and find his own ride to go. Also, as a 5th year senior and AA there really wouldn't have been much point in him going to the Duhawk open as an unattached wrestler.

Fulsaasfan---I know very little about UNI's 25 pounder, any chance that Cruise can break this starting lineup?

I was there with FF and can agree 100% with what he has said. Raising DID when it and it really wasn't that close if you ask me. I might also add that I was REALLY Impressed with Ambrose! He really suprised me, he looked GREAT!!

None of the coaches were in Dubuque and that happens at some of the opens when there aren't any starters wrestling. It is up to the wrestlers to go, to get there own ride, and to pay there own way. Some of there families were there and in instances like Carew and Lira there fathers help coach them during the open tournaments.
