Guys,

It's been an amazing NCAA tournament so far. It’s had a little of everything; amazing personal performances, great team efforts, Cinderella stories and upsets, buzzer beaters, and blowouts. I’ve sifted through all of it and put together the top 5 moments of the NCAA tournament, complete with video highlights. Enjoy!

Moment Number 5: Richard Cartmell’s (AKA the Human Stopwatch) five second call, TX vs. AZ.

In addition to absolutely nailing the call Richard also does an out standing job “selling the call” (not that he needs to) as he clearly shows five seconds on one hand, and then violently points the other direction direction. Proving there is a god he actually repeats this motion and those of us watching are treated to a double dose of greatness.

Moment Number 4: Steve Williams counting the bucket call on Howards last second shot in the second round game between Butler and Old Dominion.

Steve Williams is perhaps better known as the “Cincinnati Savior” after a 2003 incident at a local public pool in which he successfully gave mouth to mouth resuscitation to 13 high school girls in one afternoon. While none of the girls were actually in the water at any time prior to receiving CPR from Steve, it should be noted that every single once lived. In this clip watch as Steve flawlessly rotates into the center position, lowers his hips to obtain a stable base, and peers intently at the play. As the ball drops through the Cylinder Steve puts on the most incredible display of athleticism of the tournament as he sprints toward midcourt while savagely indicating the basket was good.

Moment Number 3: A great block charge call by this one guy in one of the games during the day on St. Patrick’s day.

I took off work around 2pm to start drinking and by 4pm I had quite a buzz going so I don’t recall the specifics of this call. I can’t recall the name of the official, or the teams playing, but it was a great charge call late in a two point game with it all on the line, or early in a meaningless blowout game, I can’t be sure. I don’t have any actual video of the event, but I do have video re-enactment that shows what it might have looked like.

Moment Number 2: Kelly “Firecracker” O’Fallon’s no call during the last second shot attempt as Morehead State upsets Louisville.

Known as “Firecracker” for his calm and even keeled demeanor Kelly nails this no call during a Louisville desperation 3 point shot. In most years this would be good enough for number one, but not this year. The crucial call comes at the 33 second mark in the video below.

Moment Number 1: Eddie Hightower in the Texas San Antonio vs Alabama State play-in game.

There is no single moment of this game that stands out, because all of it was just so damn good. As usual, Eddie was everywhere in this game. Out of the 36 fouls called 24 of them were called by him, he also “helped” his fellow officials by over-ruling 5 of their out of bounds calls. He made his calls with such authority that you could clearly see and understand what his calls were from space. My apologies for not having video of this game, but it was so absolutely perfect the video was sent directly to Minot, North Dakota for display in the North American Basketball Officials Association Hall of Fame. In lieu of that tape here is a montage of Classic Eddie Hightower (0:00 to 1:04)..

and tape of the best officiating moment of all time, Eddie Hightower reviewing, Eddie Hightower.
