DT Brice Stevenson Transfer Commits To Hawks

also from article:

A three-year starter at Holy Cross, Stevenson finished this past season with 37 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. At the end of the year, he decided to enter the transfer portal to pursue other opportunities and earned scholarship offers from Iowa, Wyoming, Temple, Arkansas State, UTEP, Kent State, Ball State, Southern Miss, and Buffalo.

Not exactly a murderer's row of other offers -- let's hope he's a diamond in the rough!

Looks like the Hawks are targeting the FCS, at least early in this portal. In addition to this dude from Holy Cross, there's the DBack from Villanova and the kicker from ND State.

I assume he and Bell hit it off. If Bell prioritized him this early on then hey what the heck. They needed a big dude in there really bad to replace Pace. This kid should be plug and play for early downs and obvious short yardage situations

Yes. It seems our strategy is to go after good players at FCS teams rather than guys that have rode the bench in the major programs. We have had some success with that

I know we haven't had big splashes yet, but Iowa seems to have a knack in finding those hidden gems. I mean, I can recall a lot of groaning when Gronowski committed. And there was a bit skepticism if he could play at this level at the start. But, I think we can agree he will be missed and he showed he could play.

Iowa likely evaluated his potential and ability, but the fact he was a leader and winner. Most wins by any player at any level. Hopefully, our staff has done their homework.

I still don’t get why we target guys from these schools.
One aspect is the obvious. Iowa has said if you are chasing a bag then Iowa is probably not the place for you. In most cases these guys at a smaller school are not chasing it as they need a place to prove themselves and its a numbers game. There are lots of good players that just get overlooked due to the teams they play on in high-school and their financial background. If your team stinks and you cannot afford to camp at schools the chances of eyes getting on you are very slim so lots slip through.

Also, recruiting is not an exact science. There are plenty of late bloomers that have grown physically and have shown they can play at a higher level than maybe it was anticipated. What role does Iowa see these guys playing? Are they developmental guys they think can play in a year or two, Rotational guys, or day 1 starters? Does a portal guy fill a spot they don't feel there are any high-school targets available?

The glaring things most won't get to know, at the detail we want, is who did we have conversations with and how did those conversations go? Guys like Koi Perich who we recruited and had some form of relationship with would be an example. He was a previous target, would fit in immediately at a couple positions at positions we have had great success at getting guys to the next level but have no idea if he was even interested or what he was asking for. I am sure there are cases where the player wants to come here and the coaches want them to come here but we cannot meet the financials. I am also sure there are guys asking for too much and they automatically disqualify themselves. Unfortunately the resources are limited so I am sure there are some very brief conversations or emails only to find it isn't realistic.

My personal belief is many of these kids are hung high and dry by people saying to chase the bag and they are worth more than what they realistically can get that is why when the portal season ends so many kids who many gave up a full scholarship are left with nowhere to go.

It's a double-edged sword. There's nothing wrong with being frugal and pragmatic, but, the question is, are those the players that are going to elevate you to the next level?

I see a Noah Shannon 2.0 here. He'll give us plenty of snaps next year and will hold his own at times and add to depth, but it's hard to see him moving the needle.

I think the staff sees the portal as a tool for roster building by filling gaps here and there, which is necessary and smart, but hopefully they understand that this team is "right there." Bringing in one or two difference makers (i.e., a beast at DT or DE, or punishing offensive lineman, etc.) potentially could justify the cost.

Did you see his pic? He even looks like Noah Shannon.

I trust the defensive coordinator who has held opponents to under 20 points per game for 10 straight years. The only FBS school to do that.

It's obvious that we don't have the huge amount of funds other schools have and we cannot get into a bidding war with them. These actions are doing what we can with what we have.

Good stuff.
