Drew Ott

RS Freshman Matt Nelson is our next up and coming DE. The guy is like 6'8 275 pounds, and has seen playing time this year. I'm excited about him & his future at Iowa.

I don't think he meets the last requirement.

He has played in 4 games. If the rule only accounts for regular season games that is more than the three games and 33% of games. If the rule counts postseason then he is below 30% games. So maybe he could get a medical hardship?

He played some against North Texas. Very unfortunate if that is the one thing that prevents it.

I'd think that he has a chance if he petitions for another year to get one. This would be under a medical hardship exemption. He appeared in 5 games as a freshman. As a senior he played full time in 4 games. In cases this does work.

I feel bad for the young man. We all had a feeling that he was going to have a great season and then this.

Gary Dolphin thinks he may have a chance

Dolph called into Sound Off and said that since Ott has not used his redshirt, games played this year may not matter and may have a good chance of seeking medical redshirt if he would choose to come back.

He's worked extremely hard to get where he is, I hope the NCAA gives him another shot because he deserves one.

The number is rounded up. Thirty percent of 12 is 3.6 games. Thus, if Ott has played in four games, he does meet the requirement.

Well, if Ott has a great rehab he will probably be NFL ready but will the NFL balk at him after the knew injury.

The medical surgeries and rehabs are so good that most athletes come back from them very well, look at Frank Gore and just recently Clowney.

Maybe Ott would like to play another year for the hawks and show the NFL he is 110%.

This sucks for the Hawks and really sucks for Drew. A guy that has worked as hard as he has doesn't deserve this. I'm not too hopeful on the medical redshirt chance; but I have full confidence that Iowa's medical and training staff will get him back into shape and hopefully give him a shot at the NFL.

Remember that blowout loss to Michigan and Brady Hoke in the Big House in 2012? That was Drew Ott's first game, they held him out through the season up to that game. I know it was probably his decision, and he probably desperately wanted to play even though that year was a total waste of a year and was like nearly rock bottom for the Hawks.

But anyway good luck Drew Ott.

Yeah, but you are you and Drew Ott is a viking demigod. You could tell on his face he felt something go. It might have hurt, but Drew Ott didn't care about that. He was upset because he knew right away it was a mechanical failure in the knee.
I tore my ACL and walked off. It's not that big a deal unless you're soft. :p
