Drake is going to beat Iowa.

Uthoff was not "in foul trouble". His own coach fouled him out by following archaic rules.

Please explain. Five minutes into the game, Uthoff picked up his second foul and didn't see the floor until after halftime. A minute and a half (or so) into the second half he picks up his third foul. How is that, as you put it, not "in foul trouble"? And also, I don't understand how you claim "his own coach fouled him out" when Uthoff ended the game with only 3 fouls. He played only 21 minutes because he was in foul trouble.

If you don't understand why he sat for 15 minutes in the first half, you've never coached or played basketball.

It was sure great to have Uthoff on the floor at the end of the game when we needed some key buckets. He had to sit because the fouls dictated that.

Not true. There is more than just 1 school of thought on this. I've coached and played the game, and I would've left him in. And I'm not the only one. Not saying that my way is correct and yours is wrong. Just saying, sitting him is not the only option.

Iowa was 96th in the RPI at this time last year, we're 34th this year. And that's going to go up even further after our schedule to start B10 play win or lose. We're in great shape for a third straight tournament appearance.

Of course it's not the ONLY option but it seems like the smart option. If you leave him in you have two choices... 1. have your best player operating at full capacity while risking another foul which will certainly necessitate altering your long term game strategy or, 2. having your best player operating cautiously which necessitates him playing at a marginally lower level while the opposing coach runs everything at him.

My bet is 99 out of 100 experienced coaches will sit him for the remainder of the half unless things get totally out of hand. There will always be choices but the only smart choice is to sit him... in my opinion.

I'm not picking a side on this. But Fran has been consistent year after year at Iowa. If you get 2 fouls in the 1st half you sit until the 2nd half. White and/or Marble (as seniors) may have gotten a few minutes in the 1st half but that was the exception not the rule.

Some of you are so full of crap. It's like you know nothing about the sport. Iowa will be fine. This game was never in serious doubt. This is an NCAA tournament team.

I really hope you're right, but I'm still not so sure. Our B1G schedule is BRUTAL. IF we play in the B1G like we did against FSU and Drake, then there's no way we make the tourney. If we play in the B1G like we did against ISU for the first 38 minutes, then we'll finish in the top half, no doubt.

While I'm not the most optimistic, there's hope that they can vastly improve, which they'll need to, because the B1G sure as heck isn't weak this season. What's encouraging is that this group hasn't played together a whole lot (except for the Seniors and Jok, of course), so the potential for them to keep "gelling" more is pretty high. We'll find out soon enough.

That's exactly what it is outside of three teams, one of which we'll get at least once and maybe twice without their All-American. We are in the best position to make the tournament at this point of the season of any of Fran's teams, and it's not even close.

Take care of business at home, .500 on the road, win a game or 2 in the B1G tourney.........That should be enough to make the tourney.

If "taking care of business at home" means winning them all, you have us needing to win 13 or 14 conference games and 1 or 2 in the BIG 10 tournament to PROBABLY make the NCAA?

So, according to your own statement, Uthoff played 21 minutes, and committed three fouls. He lost AN ENTIRE HALF of basketball and had two fouls to give. The officials didn't sit him out. Fran did. We lost an entire half of basketball from our best player because...he MIGHT get another foul? Well, he didn't. Fran sat him out and got nothing for it.

99 of 100? You'd lose that bet.

Nic Baer also had 2 fouls in the first half. He stayed in the game. Played 30 minutes to Uthoff's 21. Both ended up with 3 fouls.

Sorry, Mike. Guess I should have said that our B1G schedule sure as heck isn't weak. @Maryland, @OSU, @Illinois with no home games vs. those three. All places that we usually have trouble winning at (we haven't played @Maryland frequently, I know). Last season was an anomaly, IMO. We're missing out on playing a lot of the lower-tier teams twice. That was my point.

I prefer a tougher schedule. The games are more fun to watch. Play a bad team and it's a bad loss or an expected win. Play a good team and it's a win we can talk about and enjoy or a loss that doesn't come as a complete surprise.

Side Note - I think NW is going to be a tough game for a lot of people. I'm fine with only playing them once and at home. This is a game everyone expects to win (even on the road) and I don't think that's a given anymore...just my opinion.

It's all about the RPI getting to the play the top three teams five times including three times on the road is great for the RPI win or lose. Plus more chances for a signature win.
