Drake game

That sure was an impressive win.

The balance was great. What was it, everyone played and only one person didn't score.

How do you keep players happy with limited minutes?

Chit Chad is exceeding expectations even though I had no expectations.

Should Heiden and Hays being playing at the same time?

I'm ready for Addie Deal to breakout........

Having a point guard who is quick and can penetrate and dish within the system is great.
Having a PG who can also nail 3s with consistency, as Chit Chat has been doing, is special.
Heiden will continue to dominate as long as she learns how not to foul when out of position, and until she runs up against taller players...i.e. UCLA.

It was crazy, no one was standing out, and we were just dominating. Rodriguez looked really good, both offensively and defensively. She is a ball-stopper on offense, but when she is making shots like she is, you live with it. Once she figures out the right balance of keeping the ball moving and attacking, look out.

Once again, Houston was a stud. When she and Stuelke were in the front court together, we were scary fast on defense. Stuelke should be an B1G All-Defensive Team candidate.

I think this team is a legit 10-deep, but right now, it seems like Stremlow doesn't have a defined spot in the rotation. Houston and Hays come in for Stuelke/Heidin, Rodriguez subs for Feuerbach, and Deal subs for McCabe. Jan doesn't really ever want to take Wright out, but when she does, Deal slides over to 1.

What is Stremlow? Is she the 3rd wing of the bench? I think she needs to be out there more, but I don't think she is better than Rodriguez. She is probably better than Deal right now, but we need to Deal to grow, and fast. I know Stremlow struggles at point against any team that brings pressure, but I think a couple minutes per quarter at backup PG, plus rotating through the wing, is the ultimate landing spot. Just make sure Deal is on the floor at the same time Stremlow is playing point, and the two of them can share primary ball-handling duties.

It will work itself out. As the competition improves, it will start to become more obvious who needs to be playing.

I could see Fuererbach's minutes being diminished as the season progresses. Right now Kylie's experience is her main advantage she has over the talented group of young girls behind her on the depth chart. But it only seems like a matter of time before she gets passed.

First game I was able to watch as I don’t have B10+. Overall, think this team will surprise, in a good way. Heiden is the real deal, and gives us the post presence we need. Hays is better than I thought. One thing- free throws! Gotta figure that out, and this team could be elite.

Games like that are kinda tough to try evaluating because It doesn't feel like Iowa's been really tested yet. But there's no complaining about how everyone is playing for the most part. 6 players in double figures. I think 4 players had 3 or more assists with Stuelke leading the way with 5.

To nit pick I would say Ava has to stay out of foul trouble better then that. And it wasn't just that she got fouls but what kind of fouls they were. One was a really bad one in the back court you can't be doing that 90 feet away from the hoop. I hope she learns that fast. And rebounding for much of the game Drake was pretty much even with us on that. Heiden, Hays and Stuelke can't get em all. Our guards will need to help out more with that.

The player I'm most surprised about so far is Houston she's played so well that she's played her way into being Stuelkes backup and deserving of mins. Emely and Chit-Chat we kinda knew if Iowa was going to be good that they'd have big roles in that. And wow both have looked phenomenal. But Houston I had no clue coming off her injury in HS what to expect. She's our super secret weapon

I thought that at first, as well. But after seeing them in person a couple times, I think her value as a defender is big enough that her role won't be reduced. She is our best off-ball defender on the perimeter by a mile. As good as Wright is as an on-ball defender, she can get a bit lost off-ball (we saw that last night with Drake's cutting-heavy offense). Kylie really makes a difference out there. Also, Deal just isn't as far along as I thought she would be.

I thought Rodriguez would get lost on D against Drake's offense last night, but she was really locked in. Great sign!

This team still has lots of room to grow and they are trending in the right direction. As the competition stiffens, and it will, they will need to be better than they are right now.

Should be lots of fun to watch.

I think Stremlow will split time with Feurerbach. F better defensively, Stremlow probably better shooting 3s.

You're correct, Chit Chat did get lost on D a few times last night -- have to assume she's got the skill to up that part of her game.

What stands out to me about Rodriquez is that she can take players 1-on-1 and create her own shot. Since CC left, I can't think of a single player who was on Iowa's roster last year who could create their own shot: not Feurerbach, not McCabe, not Stuelkie, not Heiden. That trait isn't always necessary when a team is as unselfish as the Hawks, but having someone who you can get the ball to when the clock is winding down and nothing is happening offensively and who can create a decent shot -- that's a difference maker vs top teams -- especially when Stuelke and Heiden can then crash the glass. Top SEC teams always have a player like this, and Iowa needs a player like this to be a Top 10 team. Rodriguez may be the answer.

Iowa looked great again. If anything, we have too many good players.

The long term outlook on the program looks great. Hopefully we have a great year. Top 16 and hosting first two rounds of the tournament!

It is the rarest and most valuable trait in the game. She seemingly does it with ease. I think it will make a big difference when we see those other top teams at some point.

Stremlow will have 2 or 3 head-scratchers per game (caught in the air trying to make a pass, caught ball-watching on D, fouling a 3-pt shooter, etc.), but then she will grab a couple O boards, make a few perfectly timed cuts to the basket, come up with a big block, and make a pass that gets the crowd going. The game is more exciting when she is in there, and the crowd loves her. If she can keep hitting 3FGs (currently 3/7, after finishing 8/26 last year), she will need to be on the floor a lot.

Look at our Asst/TO for our top 4 assisters:

Cumulatively, 50/7, or 7.1/1.

We have some room for improvement among our young'ns.
