Doyel - Urban Meyer is a bad guy.

What Rainey did was awful. But you tell me of a big time coach in CFB that would get rid of one of his best players for it. I don't think any coach in America would. Winning is everything. Is it sad? Yes. But it is the truth

Then don't run your mouth about "core values" or "family values".

Look, I'm not a big fan of Greg Doyel at all. But it IS refreshing to see a writer take the kid gloves off with a guy the stature of Meyer and tell it like it really is.

I'm not certain that Rhoads or Ferentz would let a player back on their team for doing that. There are two for ya....

David Sims

That ended up being plead down to a misdemeanor. Ferentz would have done the same to Douglas had he not also stolen something from walmart. Anyhow, there is a huge difference between a misdemeanor infraction where nobody gets physically harmed ... and an infraction where an individual's life potentially hangs in the balance.

Oh come on guys, it's no big deal. Don't you know that the whole urban gangsta culture is perfectly acceptable these days. More than acceptable, it's "hip".

Oh yes they would have.

If David Sims or Adrian Clayborn had sent the text, the same result would have happened. A couple game suspension and back on the team. Guaranteed. It is all about winning

Are you sure about that. Douglas got kicked off and he was Iowa's best receiver by a long shot. I don't think you should guarantee anything that can't be proven.

that is about the most scathing article written about a coach that I have ever read. I don't care who the guy is that wrote it. Urban cannot be pleased with that out there.

Douglas wasn't kicked off at first. He got into more trouble, didn't he? And than he was gone. That is different.

Douglas was suspended for a year. If he could be a model citizen for that year then KF would reevaluate it after that year and maybe let him back on the team. DD screwed up within that year (at Walmart) and he was gone permanently.

I can't speak about Rhoads ... however, the last time an Iowa player hit his girlfriend ... the dude got kicked off the team. And, mind you, there wasn't an implied death-threat there.

Ferentz has ALWAYS been fair with the players. He doesn't give preference based on how they perform on the field. Rather, he DOES give them the benefit of the doubt if they have an exemplary record on the team behavior-wise. Cynical Cyclone fans assumed that Ferentz gave Clayborn the benefit of the doubt in the "taxi incident" because he was the best player. However, the truth of the matter is that Clayborn had established a PROVEN precedent of being one of the team's hardest workers, best leaders, and best people (the stuff that he's done to help others and the community is pretty impressive). Furthermore, Shonn Greene (another team leader and high-character guy) corroborated Clayborn's contention that there was CONTEXT in the "taxi incident" ... i.e. the taxi driver used a racial slur.

So, in stark contrast to what you say, NO I don't believe that ALL coaches are ONLY about winning. I firmly stand by the contention that Ferentz is one of the "good guys" in the coaching profession. Furthermore, I'm willing to think that Rhoads is probably one of those guys too.

There's a big difference between getting caught in theft twice and what Rainey did. He threatened to KILL this girl, he didn't snatch her purse or swipe some DVD's from her.

I stand by what I said. No coach in America kicks this kid off the team for what he did IF he is one of the best players on said team.

Every case is different. I am not going to judge Urban Meyers, particularly considering the pressure he is under to win. I believe that he is a good family man and that he truly cares about his players.

I think it is hypocritical for anyone on this board to criticize a major college coach for putting an emphasis on winning. To me, just reading most of the posts on this board would clearly indicate that most people only care about the Ws and the Ls. If you don't believe it, read the posts after an Iowa football loss. You would think that the world is coming to an end. There has never been more pressure on coaches and players to win than there is right now. It is just unbelievable. Wait and see what happens on this board if Iowa loses to Michigan. IT will light up like a Christmas tree with many people asking to "fire KOK", "change the system", "pass more", "blitz more", blah blah blah. They react that way because they are obsessed with winning games.

Having said all that, I really think that we are fortunate to have Kirk Ferentz. He has solid values and he tries to have rules and do things the right way. Is he perfect? Of course not, but who is.

I'm not going to judge the Florida coach or any coach until I am in their shoes and feel the pressure they are feeling to win. The decisions become very difficult to make (or even analyze) under that kind of pressure.

You can't have it both ways. If you want a nationally ranked, elite program, then the coach is going to try to keep the best players on the field so long as no rules or laws are broken. Was anybody surprised that Ferentz tried to protect Clayborn after the taxi incident? I was not.

Great post and completely agree. To much pressure on these guys to win for them NOT to try and keep players around.
