Down the stretch

Dolph stated on the radio every opponent Iowa plays down the stretch has their bye prior to our game.

If true, what type of garbage is that?

The Hawks came out of their byes world beaters, two weeks to prepare is definitely an advantage.

Who the hell cares? Ferentz has an overall losing record after a bye. The mythical "bye advantage" is the most overrated thing in sports. And it's not every opponent. It's 4 in a row: MD, NW, MN, and Ill. And NW doesn't even count because we had a bye the week before too.

Bye weeks can also be a distraction. Teams can get out of their usual rhythm. And extra time off can lead to other problems ie DUIs on mopeds.

Wisconsin plays nebraska the week before iowa. Nebraska plays minnesota the week before iowa.

Illinois and minnesota are coming off byes.

I think he said a bi-week, it sounded like bye week on the radio. He must have meant to say bi-week.

bye weeks are an advantage in theory (get guys healthy, two weeks to practice and prep for the next team, blah blah blah). In reality, not so much. Iowa vs. Northwestern was a nice exception to the rule but I've seen plenty of teams (and not just Iowa) look like complete garbage after a bye because they're rusty due to an entire week+ of minimal contact practices. That's what makes ya soft.

Some teams don't need it, they have upperclassmen that are used to the grind, and would much rather stay in rhythm. In the Hawks case this year, bye weeks have been extremely helpful, they've managed to heal up, and take that extra time working on correcting the growing pains.

I don't think it matters much. Iowa isn't particularly hard to gameplan for, you know what is coming you just have to execute. That isn't a slight, just a fact.

Maybe a slight advantage as far as health but teams are so beat up at this point those little nagging injuries don't go away over a bye week. Personally, I think there is something to be said for being in the groove this time of year as far as the week leading up to a game. Bye weeks can throw that off.

I think the biggest issue is health. Having a week to rest your bumps, bruises, and sprains is nice. Also nice to have a mental break as well.
