Dowling DE John Waggoner Slowing Down Decision-Making Process

If it wasn't for NBC they'd be irrelevant. The exposure they've gotten over the years on network TV like that is their meal ticket. Being in a major conference now is a must. They'll have to get really really good again for them to matter in the grand scheme of things nowadays...

Right. They better get Alabama kind of good quick as each year creeps closer to being just a top 20 type team no more special than anyone else. To put it even a little more clearly, just look at Nebraska. Kids of age now have never seen Nebraska win a conference title or national title. Mostly just misc bowl games. Nothing special. Same will happen to Notre Dame. I don't care what they did 3 or 4 decades ago.

And kids care even less.. I'm not as in tune with ND fans but they can't be as bad as Nebraska fans when it comes to their living in the past are they? Nebraska fans are obnoxious. The early 90s were a long time ago for crying out loud.

If they're irrelevant, then all but about a half dozen programs in the country are also irrelevant. They're no longer on the upper tier of programs but they're far from borderline-irrelevant.
They're irrelevant in the same way that Nebraska is. They're the uncle Rico of college sports, holding onto yesteryear (or yestercentury) and touting their greatness while everyone else in the room knows that in reality their football went away at the same time their Jordache high tops and slap bracelets did.

They really pound that Catholic, "dream to play for Notre Dame," brought to you by Knute Rockne and Rudy shit into those kids, don't they?

They've had 3 decent years in the last 15, but those gingers just beat down the door to play there.

Yes, but you can't beat the education, though, and he's a really smart kid.

Over the past 15 years, I can't think of another school that gets fewer wins from so much talent.

I don't disagree that it's a good school, I just think their fans are stuck in fantasyland and watched Knute Rockne, All American ten too many times.
I live in Indiana, and the fans are delusional. They really think they are playing for the NC at the start of every year. The most annoying thing here is the ND/IU love. I have never seen anything like it. People here root for ND football, then they magically switch to IU fans when basketballs starts. It is weird. Can you imagine rooting for Iowa during football season, then switching to an Iowa State fan when basketball starts? Seriously, they do it. A lot of them.

yes, it is just baffling how texas can do so little with so much talent.

Not baffling at all for anyone familiar with team sports.

A good coach can turn around the worst programs (see Bill Snyder/Hayden Fry/Barry Alvarez) and a bad coach can turn around a proud program (see Notre Dame coaches Faust/Davie/Willingham/etc.)

That's what people in Omaha do. NU football and Creighton basketball.

I like to mess with them and ask about the opposite sport for each school. How is Creighton looking for football this year, and how is NU looking for basketball? They always have to explain how they only like certain school for the certain sport. Always makes them look like total fair weather bandwagoners.
