Dowling DE John Waggoner Slowing Down Decision-Making Process

John Waggoner was hoping to commit to a college before the end of the month. Those plans have changed for the West Des Moines Dowling Catholic DE:

Well crap... I wonder if the depth chart at Iowa might have a tad to do with it... Iowa's got a boat load of DEs and young ones at that. There may be a path of least resistance for PT at any number of those other places... If he goes somewhere else I just hope it's not to OSU or Michigan.. Go to Oklahoma or somewhere we won't hear from him again. And what's the deal with ND is he waiting on them? I guess I'm confused on that whole deal why wouldn't they have offered?

Does this mean he is slowing his roll or is this more like a "who dis?" text to the coaching staff?

This doesn't guarantee he is leaving, but this probably isn't the best sign for Iowa either. The depth chart has nothing to do with it. Look at the list of schools he has offers from. He'll be competing with some high end guys at those places too. But he has a lot of good options and he should look at what's out there if his dream isn't to be a Hawkeye. Look, I love the home state but moved elsewhere and it was a great decision for me. In the end, I think it'll depend on the type of year Iowa has. I think Piershbacher ends up a Hawkeye if they had a 8-4 season rather than a 4-8 season. If the Hawks win 8-9 games, we'll have a good shot. If we disappoint, he's likely headed elsewhere

That's the type of progression which would cost Iowa Waggoner. There is no reason for Iowa to cut its win total in half 2 seasons after the Rose Bowl. All that would do is reinforce the notion good seasons are flukes.

How often does a top Iowa HS recruit slow down the process...to consider other top tier options...and end up going to Kirk?

"Staying Home" is overrated. I would love for him to stay, but he should go wherever he feels is his best path. Alabama, OSU, wherever.
Same as if an OL from let's say Tennessee goes to Iowa because he feels Iowa gives him the best chance to make it to the next level based on our history of putting guys in the NFL. We would all say he made an intelligent, mature decision to ditch his homestate Volunteers.

I'd love to have him but we're loaded at de.

There are two de's. A. Nelson will be a senior when Waggoner is a redshirt freshman, if he redshirts. A chance to be a three year starter. Plenty plays available in situational football even in his first year. He has a better chance to be a three year starter at Iowa then he does at OSU. We need to stop the talent drain.

ND is his dream school, but they told him they may only take 1 DE in this class - they took quite a few last year if I remember right. Purely a numbers game for them.

They really pound that Catholic, "dream to play for Notre Dame," brought to you by Knute Rockne and Rudy shit into those kids, don't they?

They've had 3 decent years in the last 15, but those gingers just beat down the door to play there.

I sure woulda thought that whole shine woulda rubbed off by now too... Talk about an over rated program. They've had a generation of kids grow up with them being borderline irrelevant now.

If they're irrelevant, then all but about a half dozen programs in the country are also irrelevant. They're no longer on the upper tier of programs but they're far from borderline-irrelevant.

If it wasn't for NBC they'd be irrelevant. The exposure they've gotten over the years on network TV like that is their meal ticket. Being in a major conference now is a must. They'll have to get really really good again for them to matter in the grand scheme of things nowadays...
