Don't know if anybody cought this................

This was from last week's "Two Guy named Jim" show on WHO.

One of the guests was Rob Howe and some of what he stated caught me totally off guard, some didn't. Here is a summary...............

1. The D-Tackle position will probably be the deepest since ferentz has been at Iowa. (I hadn't heard that.)

2. The D-End position is a problem and something that was not addressed by this year's recruiting or by going after JC prospects. (No surprise)

3. The linebacker position will be very strong since there will be so many sr. linebackers.
(No surprise.)

3. The O-Line could be very good this year. (No surprise if those two that got hurt will fully recover.)

4. No idea who will be the next QB, but has heard the JC guy may have an edge.

5. They got at least one JC receiver that they expect will contribute in a major way in 2013. (Hadn't heard that he'd be that good and forgot the name.)

This could have been just me, but Rob Howe seemed skeptical if ferentz can turn this around. They talked a bit about coaching changes but this was before the official announcement last week.

We may have A LOT of defensive linemen - numberwise. Time will tell how good this unit ends up becoming. I am torn on the question of Kirk being able to turn this thing around for the third time. While I completely support all of the coaching changes that have taken place, it also can indicate Kirk is scrambling. And when you are scrambling, sometimes that is not the best position to be in ...

At DT Iowa has LTP, Davis, Cooper and Hardy returning. Add in JJ and Faith as redshirt freshmen and that is the depth at DT. May or may not be best that KF has had.

Hardy has played some DE but think DT may be his best spot. HOpefully Alvis, Ott, McMinn and Spears can be productive at DE. It was a problem in 2012 but if these four can stay healthy, we will be better.

Other comments seem to be what most people are thinking. I am one who thinks KF will get it done a third time.

Howe is usually pretty pessimistic when it comes to the Hawks. Sounded downright bullish considering the source.

My guess on why Rob thinks that Sokol has the edge is because Rudock didn't play and CJ and Cody both redshirted last season. That is the extend of Rob's "Insider" knowledge of who has the edge.

Good write up on Powell. Man, do they need him.

Howe also seemed to believe that other than QB, the D End position was the biggest weakness on the team.

I agree DE is an extremely big if not the biggest weakness. I think QB is the biggest question mark as to who is going to play but not the biggest weakness.

Rob is pretty tough on KF in general. I am concerned about DE too. WR & QB until we see different. I could see Sokal emerging as the starter. I think he is suppose to be the most mobil isnt he ??

With D End being so weak is there even a chance we look to go 3-4 this year?? I don't know that our contain on the edge could be worse.

I don't think so, to run a true 3-4 defense you have to have a really big true nose tackle. Iowa does not have a single player he can play nose tackle.

Like others have said, there may be depth but is there talent? Size? Speed? Power? Experience? And....proven productivity?

The depth at LB is quite possibly the worst in all of college football.
It is going to make Iowa's DE issues look like nothing.

LBs has 3 proven starters and 1 solid back-up. DE has who, Alvis? He is a good player but he isn't that great. Beyond that it's all FR, RD FR and SO with little to no experience.

Lb has three starters all with at least two years experience, one that is a senior. Compared to all our other positions, except maybe o line, we are deepest here. IMO Davey boy. Don't be hating
