Don't be fooled by Ferentz

Greg Davis' "retirement" will change nothing. This was simply the sacrifice that Ferentz gave us to distract from the real issue: him. Ferentz has been a master of deceit for two decades and this move is in his own self-interest.

(1) Give the fans a scapegoat and avoid more fire for the time being; and

(2) Move Brian another space forward on the chessboard toward becoming our next coach.

This move might be in the short term benefit of this program. We might see immediate changes that are positive (but probably not). Ferentz calls the shots on offense, always will, and this just opens the window for control-freak Ferentz to control Iowa football more and for longer.

Thanks GD for being a Hawkeye.

Well what ever you think Greg Davis's offenses were pretty below average for the most part. I think many offensive coaches could have found a passing game with 2 1000 yard rushers to run play action with.

I just think shotgun formation was a waste of time with this team as it mainly signaled pass. Last year with DMX we ran and passed from that formation a much more even amount of time

I am not following the OP at all. KF has had exactly 2 OCs and 2 DCs in 18 years. You make it seem like he is canning coaches left and right and that is clearly not the case. If anything KF sticks with coaches far too long.

I think Brian is the right move. Listen...if he fails, it brings down the entire House of Ferentz. I personally think he succeeds and we add some wrinkles to the passing game to take more vertical chances. IMO, the timing is good for Brian...he may have a new QB, but we have 7-8 Oline returnees and the competition is going to make these guys better. If they can protect...the offense should be really good in Brian's first year.

If Brian becomes the OC..Expect KF to allow him to do things that will make the offense 'better". I beleive KF main motivation to keep coaching is to see Brian succeed him as HC. The only way this happens is Brian succeeds as OC. If not,he becomes the lightening rod that demands change from the entire Ferentz clan. I beleive Brian will succeed and eventually become HC.

FDR knew Pearl Harbor was going to be bombed by the Japanese before it happened.
There was a shooter in the grassy knoll in Dallas in '63.
The moon landing was faked.
Bush and Cheney coordinated the 9/11 attacks.
Obama was born in Kenya and is secretly a Muslim.
The Russians gave the election to Trump.
Kirk Ferentz had Greg Davis retire so he could move Brian up the chessboard to eventually allow him to be head coach.

Yep. Fits right in.

I agree with the OP, not sure things will really change. Most Iowa fans complained about O'Keefe & then Davis. I think Brian may be the only one who can get through to his dad and change things up with this boring offense.

So the best arguments for having the son be the new OC are...

It is his "turn"

He might be the only one the godfather will listen to

We don't want to upset the godfather

The son needs this as the next step...to become heir to the Gambino family

Few if any quality candidates will come to lead a godfather run vanilla program

The son will/might be a good recruiter, Coach Davis didn't recruit much and didn't "like it"

The son might be a great OC...even though the o-line he coached seemed inept in pass blocking

OK...convinced me...

And we wonder why we are embarrassed in bowl games...

Father and son can neither one recruit. That's where it begins. Nothing will change as long as KF is here. This was planned all along, and is the next step so daddy can get sonny boy the HC job. Pathetic. Which Ferentz will be hired on next? Shouldn't he be creating a position for one of them? Kicking game coordinator maybe?

one ting that terrifies me about Brian is if he does become the OC, then some day when his dad retires at Iowa(probably around 2045) then Brian will end up like his dad and we Iowa fans and our children will be stuck with this same boring brand of football. If Brian does get the OC position, I hope he changes things up big time (if he can convince daddy dearest.)
