Doing something about tv

I know it probably will not help. But people need to let Barta and the BTN we are not happy. I e-Mailed Barta and the BTN last year to complain, and never got a response. Maybe some of you are big givers who have access to Barta and could complain. The people who should be upset the most are the people who had Mediacon the first year of the BTN and were told if they wanted the BTN to get a dish. Now the BTN sells some games to Mediascum, what a slap in the face. I know the BTN did not have rights to some of the games. Maybe the Iowa could get someone to tv the games and sell them to local stations. I have no answers. But sometimes if enough people complain good things happen. This whole thing has been good for Mediascum, who has had there buts kicked by satellite tv.

The bigger issue IMO is why the BTN won't use the overflow channels for basketball season.

The game on Tuesday night, while it is against an opponent that doesn't warrant a lot of TV recognition. The BTN must have said we are not going to televise the game, so then Mediacom gets next crack at it. They jump all over it.

Why can't anyone understand that DRAKE had the rights, not IOWA!

We all understand this... You are totally missing the point. The BTN is not showing some of our HOME games either. LA Monroe, Idaho St. Louisiana Tech.. That's 3 of them this year alone that they could have shown but did not for whatever reason.

The issue is money....

the overflow channels cost money. They can (and do) offer them for the football games because enough people watch the football games to make it worthwhile for the BTN to send a production crew and purchase the space on the overflows. Because more people watch football games (throughout the entire Big 10 footprint, not just Iowa) they can also charge more for advertising. They can't get the same dollars for Iowa-Louisiana Tech.

I too wish all of our non-conference home games were on BTN, but it's a tradeoff I'm willing to accept for having all the conference games on without having to purchase ESPN Full Court. I just wish the BTN would acknowledge that in this instance they are offering less exposure that what was previously available. Don't "message" around it by saying they offer games via streaming. Watching games online is not the same as being able to get it in HD on a 55-inch screen in your living room. It's just not. Plus the quality and reliability of the feed is often questionable.

Agree with what DodgerHawki said about the Big Ten just acknowledging that we Iowa fans are now worse off then before with regards to TV. My responses from them are always that more games are televised now then ever before for Big Ten teams. Well that may be true because Northwestern and Penn State rarely televised non-conference games, but Iowa has had every home game televised for 25 years prior to the BTN. Hell even some road games were on KGAN or KDSM (ESPN+). Like the Rainbow Classic back in 2001 or 2002 when we played Detroit and Tennessee, or in 2006 when we played at St. Louis. Shoot I even remember watching games on local TV growing up when we played out at Cal-Irvine and South Florida. The BTN is great overall, but for non-conference Iowa basketball, it's a severe downgrade.

The other problem is start times. Why would the Idaho State game be a 12:30pm Saturday afternoon start when there was no TV for it? Can we not choose any of our start times? Not enough evening weekend games.

Wisconsin's game on Thursday is on the BTN...and they are a more successful program than Iowa. It's happening to other teams, too...once the BigTen regular season begins, ever game pitting a conference team against a conference team will be televised.

At a minimum, the BTN should show re-broadcasts of all games they do not show live at some point in the week. Ratings have to be better than for a ''Greatest Games of 1995'' for the 43rd time. I understand Iowa is not a marquee bb program in the league now,but the Big Ten has a fundamental principle of equality and fairness,so no reason why IU( a horrible team also) gets virtually every game on BTN,either live or re-broadcasted, while Iowa languishes far behind.

How can they re-broadcast something they don't broadcast?

They did it for one Iowa game this year. It is called CampusU or something like that ,and it was student announcers doing the game.
I think they do these games as dress rehearsal for the real deal when they graduate. Most of the league schools have had these student broadcasts re-run for BTN programming.
Tonite it is being streamed on BTN.com,so it is out there to be rebroadcasted.
Medicom also shows the games so they could re-broadcast that telecast also.

So the OP wants us to write Barta to complain about the BTN and Mediacom be he feels we are beeing treated unfairly by them....

Thats a good idea, I'm also going to write him to complain about the ticket in the mail I got yesterday from the speed camera in CR...

For those fans who live within a 2 hour drive of Carver, I'd encourage you to go to every home game in person.

For those that aren't within a reasonable commute, I'd say that the vast majority of the games are on TV. For the few that aren't, listen along on the radio.

I guess it's a good sign that some segment of our fan base cares about Iowa basketball enough to complain that they can't see us play Small Directional School State University Tech on TV. I didn't know that many people cared. :)

I am a fan of the BTN and how it's financially helped the B10 but it does tick me off that you have to pay $8 for a single game on stream. (I know you get a month of streaming but there is usually only one game I want to see.) I wish it were free but at the very least less expensive (maybe $2-$4)

Actually they had 2 games in Nov. and 2 in December. So I paid $16 for 2 months, and after tonights game, I will cancel. So it cost $4 per game.

Then why are we playing a home and away against Drake? It's Drake for the love of God! Who cares if they are in the same state as us, we shouldn't be doing home and away games vs Drake nor UNI. If they want to play us, they play us at Carver....end of story.

If you're myoptically talking about IN-state viewing, you're right.

But for the big-picture, nation-wide Hawkeye base, the BTN is great.

The only thing that gets me is that they double-dip on their customers. We're already paying for the cable network whether the Hawks are on it or not tonight, so why should we have to pay to watch online? Either make us suffer through advertisements, or give the cable customers some kind of code to enter so they don't have to pay for the streaming (that way the BTN doesn't have to worry about people dropping the cable network to watch for free online).
