Does Iowa get a player on the All-Freshman team?

This freshman class in the BoneG is so freaking good. I think there is a serious possibility that we get shut out of the all freshman team, ending our streak. Gesell is pretty much our only chance at this point, but he has stiff competition.

Amazing how all the hype about Woodbury has faded into the woodwork only a handful of games into Conference play.

Gesell and Clemmons have an outside chance. Clemmons was like 5th in the conference in assists, and he's got a good A/TO ratio.

But it's likely no one makes it, unless they choose to count Gabe as a freshman, because Gabe.

Right now I think it would be Hammons, Dekker, Harris, Stauskas and Robinson III - so probably no. Gesell still has a decent shot if he picks it up the rest of the way.

I just thought it was interesting that our best recruiting class in, what, 10 years, and we don't really have a huge standout unlike other years.

It's harder for our freshman to stat pack because they haven't had the opportunity to play in as many blowouts as the Eric Mays and Matt Gatens got to as freshman. Unfortunately for these guys, they've only had one game where the game was decided early in the second half. Gatens, May and Basabe had weekly opportunities in games like that.

Not saying its all faded, but I think people realized he is more long term payoff then immediate reward. Only time will tell.

good point. i think in those years clemmons and/or gesell would have made it simply because they would have logged significantly more minutes and more stats.

to answer ghost's question though...i'll say no. just a product of having a great freshman class this year. and the only people who thought woody would be dominant are the delusional types who eat up the hype every year.

No Iowa freshman will make all Big Ten all freshman team. At the same time Iowa will win more Big Ten and over-all games than last year... and make the post season again.

At the end of the day it is a team game and Iowa is definitely a good and deep college BB team with many wins to come.

In the years to come it may not be so much about individual awards but more about wins and championships.

I think it's less this, and more that the other freshmen are just that much better.

No it's really not. If it was we would be a top tier B10 squad led by our two big time stars Mel Basabe and Eric May. Do you really think Dave Sobelowski was one of the top five freshman in the league last year? Of course not, there's always the token decent freshman on a bad team who played tons of minutes spot on that team. Iowa used to have a lock on that spot, unfortunately our teams improvement might have to force us to give up that spot.

This. It's got nothing to do with blowouts. Iowa simply had bad teams, and thus freshmen got a lot of playing time and put up solid numbers. Better teams, with better players, didn't have to give their freshmen as much time on the floor. Basabe/Meyers Leonard is a decent example of that contrast.

Iowa's freshmen this year aren't better than other team's freshmen. But the past All-Frosh winners, particularly Gatens/May/Basabe, benefitted from other teams not playing young guys as much.

A bette approach is how this years freshmen compare to the past freshmen that made the all freshmen team in the conference from Iowa. I doubt any will make it this year unless Iowa goes on a great winning streak.

We play 10-11 players....that does not lend itself to piling up All Frosh team stats. I agree that Harris,Hammonds,Dekker,GRIII and Stauskus are the leading contenders right now. Ferrell, Ronnie Johnson,McGary,Valentine and the Iowa Trio are also solid frosh who could make a big push late.

Then who is going to be the token player on a bad team that gets a spot this year? Look at the all-freshman roster you put together yourself. All 5 of those guys were top 100 recruits. 3 of them were top 25. Is Hammonds your "token player"?

Interesting thought: May's the only scholarship senior who'll be gone next year. Unless someone else leaves and Fran gives a late scholarship, will Iowa have a freshman on the roster next year? I assume Uthoff comes in as a sophomore. Hopefully by then the program will have players in consideration for all-conference.

If someone does leave I think they should go after that Peter Jok guy.
