Does anybody remember an Iowa DEF......

That let so many tackles slip through there Fingers/hands /grip? Seems like we used to grab a guy and slam him! Pound them in the ground. This year everybody misses, grabs at shirtails and forces them out of bounds around the corner. It was a nice game not ragging. The O looked great, Def, looked about like they have all year. Need to get back to basics TACKLING!!! for the stretch.

They came out super-intense against Northwestern and tackled really well for the first half. They had another stretch like that today in the second quarter, apparently in response to a chewing out by Ferentz. Now they need to do it for a full sixty minutes.

I don't even know why teams punt against Iowa. Iowa defense rarely stops a third down play...if teams used all four downs against Iowa, I'm not sure Iowa would ever stop them. This defense would have trouble against a good high school offense that ran the spread.

Can't tackle, the front three or four cannot put any pressure on the QB whatsoever, and Iowa certainly is not going to blitz (bad things might happen).

Does Norm even look at tapes about how other teams stop personnel? Time for Norm to step down so Iowa can move into the new century on defense. I think Norm is like Hayden was his last few years...he lost his grip on the team; Norm has lost his grip on the defense. Time for new blood...

It has little to do with tackling fundamentals and lots to do with the caliber of football players on d. Shirt tail tackles this year were hit lift and drive tackles previously because our players were in better positions.

Indiana was 6-13 on third downs today.

All you will get is an in-staff promotion, and the same D.

Indiana drove the length of the field three times and Iowa was unable to stop anything...against a first time FRESHMAN QB who Norm did not try in the least to disrupt. Indiana was almost 50% on their third downs...had they gone for some of the 4th downs, they would have converted many of them. They had men open all day and the QB was never under any pressure. Wonder what an experienced QB would do...Oh yeah, NW got almost 500 yards against Iowa and was 16-22. Still think had they gone for some 4th downs they wouldn't have converted half of those? Iowa simply is no good on defense and Norm is not about to change anything, regardless of who or what we have on the field.

Ohhh, he expected the front four to make penetration, but he always does, and this year our front four couldn't penetrate a good high school offensive line.

Until today, Indiana had averaged 12 points a game. Against Iowa, they doubled that and had a fine day on offense...their defense is worse than Iowa's if that is possible.

AND Iowa hasn't played a really good team yet this year. But Iowa sure makes some average and below average teams look very very good.

New Mexico your making good points but you saying that Iowa couldnt stop a high school offense or get penetration on a high school o line is taking away all your credibility and making you look like a complete idiot.

Wow, with this attitude, I have to ask, do you have any friends?

Negative Nancy.

I dont think the main reason is about the scheme of the D.... Rather it is the level of talent on that side of the ball. We are slow and undersized more so than I ever remember. The question is, how did we get to this point? Where is the level of talent that we should have for being a top team in the big 10 well known for its defense? I will say up front that I dont know what the answer is but rest assured, this needs digging into. Norm not on the sideline does have an affect on the players but you can see how alot of our players on D are getting beat in most of the battles.

Does anyone keep up with the recruiting side of things? I bet you that the lack of talented recruiting has been one of the issues. I also believe that since Ferentz does not like to play under classmen, we have a lot of talent that we do recruit into the program only for them to leave early because of the silly game that Ferentz plays of not letting them play until they are upper classmen.

IMO, it will be a while before we will be a good D if at all under Norm.

People said this stuff the couple of average years we had before 2009, then we almost made a national championship game pretty much because of our defense.

I just dont see getting to that point again... at least with our defense. I would like to see Norm do the right thing and stick around as an adviser but turn the reigns over for someone who is able to stay on the sideline and chew some butt. He has done us proud!

We've had one year of being average and all of a sudden we'll never have a good defense again under norm?

Thank you.

I'm really confused about the forum today. We were supposed to crush Indiana, we did, and now everyone is even more skeptical than they were before. Bizarre.

If this defense can get healthy and the offense can keep clicking, we'll be fine. Look around our division. There isn't a single team that can say they are great on both sides of the ball.

Seriously. Iowa has gone 3 bad years, 3 good years throughout KFs tenure. The trick will be not going 3 bad years.

You can complain about the recruiting, but watching Lowery, Alston, Scherff, Miller, Canzeri, and the exciting idea of Derby makes me think if this year ends up being a dropoff, it will not last like the others.

Our Defense has been our strength for years, wont ever cut on Norm!! We are just slower a foot on the DL, and cant catch a break when we get in the backfield for a sack or loss. Cb's have a ton of talent, but are'nt showing it, Lb's are fair. We are very SPOILED when it comes to the def side of the game!!!! Just hoping that something clicks or we get scheme that can be effective here down the stretch.

Its not really poor recruiting but extremely poor retention. Iowa has lost half of the players that should be current upperclassmen and what is left is injured and or not very good.

My problem is that Iowa does not have the personnel to run their normal defense, the only thing they do have going for them is speed.

Norm has to start blitzing on third downs to get off the field. Giving up a few big plays for TDs, IMO, is preferable to giving up a long drives for a TDs. The other half of the time you will get off the field quickly and your D can atleast stay fresh and your O has more time.
