Dochterman picks Hawks to go 11-1

I think they'll have a good year as well they should. Fairly easy schedule, but no way would I predict 11-1. As someone else mentioned Ferentz coached teams always lose at least one game they should win. My prediction is that they will lose one of the games between Ball St and Iowa State. I'd be pretty comfortable predicting 9-3, with an outside shot at 10-2.

Ok, I'll take Iowa and you can have Ball St. and Iowa State. I'll pay you 2 to 1...since you are saying we lose one of those. No lines, just wins. If we lose at home to either of those teams, then 2013 was a fluke. Games are still won in the trenches guys...believe it or not. Sure spread us out...but we are still going to hit your QB because we are going to send people. We are also going to press your receivers and most likely play five good DBs to negate the space. Parker has shown that he's not going to allow you to get comfortable dinking an dunking your way down field. He's going to feel you out, then start applying the pressure in various ways and force you to make great plays to extend drives. Great teams may be able to do it...Ball State and Iowa State not so much. Certainly we are going to have some growing pains in those games, but I think our defense is playing against a much better offense in camp then they will see in those games.

The back half of 2013 was some great defensive effort...I expect it to continue.

The new staff does make a difference. Execution was much better last year, the talent was just at an 8 win level. This year we have 10 win talent and an easier schedule. If the players focus this year Iowa will be very good.

Actually, 7:5 is the odds that Iowa State wins 3 games or fewer.

Why is it when I read your post the song with the words "bring in the clowns" went through my head. UNI= Good, Iowa= Good, Iowa State=BAD. The days of Earl Bruce are long forgotten.......how sad and pathetic is a program when seven wins a year is your glory years?

How so? We lost 3 LBs to the NFL and replace them with ?. Our two best players will most likely make a small leap but still dominate. Desmond King can only cover 1 person. Our QB play will likely be slightly above average and our WR play shouldn't be any better than last year. I fail to see where all of this extra talent comes from. We have an easier schedule in the B1G, but an away game at Pitt with a team like this is almost always a loss. 8-4 should be realistic for this squad. If they win more than 8 games, Iowa fans should be happy.

Because we aren't adding new guys to the mix at this position or anything like that.

Oh, wait....

Its simple. 8 wins last year. Much easier schedule with virtually the same roster. Those position groups that need experience and talent for KF teams to be good - have it. Logically, we SHOULD have more W’s unless injuries or bad bounces take over.

You can do this every year. I mean last year we had a completely untested and crappy front 4 coming back. We had a new saftey, a FR CB on D. Heck the only "established" players we had were 3 LB, and the D was pretty darned good last year. Every year in college football you have to replace players. I think it is easy to see we have wayyyyy less ???? on D this year than we did last year coming into the season.

I think like most successful KF teams it starts with the offensive line and defensive lines. You control things up front, we will be fine. Both are these are strong suits for is this year. If we control the line of scrimmage, we grind out games and win ugly as we always do. Maybe Davis will get a little more control of the playbook and we actually stretch the field. I'm still worried about our linebackers.

Exactly. This roster reminds me of 2008 when it comes to experience and depth.

Pretty exciting when someone can predict 11-1 and I don't think there is anybody saying it's totally crazy.

Less than a week and the fun begins!!

11-1 sounds a bit of a stretch to me. It seems to me a lot of fans (and homer media) tend to look at their own team and see all of the potential net improvements while at the same time viewing all the teams on the upcoming year's schedule as though they're all set in stone.

We've got 12 games on the slate - some of those teams are going to be better than last year, some are going to be worse...some'll start strong/finish week/vice versa. I'm stating the obvious here, but just trying to underscore it's very difficult to take any pre season prediction (good or bad) seriously, so I prefer to look at historical performance to set expectations - I'll take 8 wins as a good year (9 or 10 would be really exciting and 11 would be historic - i.e. don't hold your breath)

But I also think this squad will not drop the close early season games, because the 2013 team had much more continuity than the 2007 team.

I honestly don't think we will have a non conference game where we don't win by double digits.

The 11-1 Iowa prediction is a lot more likely to happen than his 11-1 prediction for Michigan out of the East Division. That is just cray cray.

too many time ive heard the pundits say "they dont play anybody until Wisconsin". What a load of crap. We aint Alabama.

How can you have 9 as a best case, but say they need to win 8 or 9 to avoid disappointing? That is a very narrow range.

Not to speak for '77, but I think he views 9 games as the limit "because" of our history under KF, in which out offense usually...leaves quite a bit to be desired, and that '77 feels the offense needs to carry the team, this season. He has valid points, and I'd be right there with him if I wasn't forcing myself to believe KF wants to let GD have full reign over the offense and will demand Iowa scores 35 per game, this season. Man....it is sort of sad that, as a fan base, we already expect to have 1 or 2 losses we "shouldn't have" due to how our HC manages games. Oh well, here's to KF turning over a new leaf AND the offense to GD.
