Do we wait another 14 years ?

It was fun with Ralph & Lute. I enjoy watching the games, but was just pointing out some facts.

Yes, it was fun with Ralph and Lute. Not so much fun when Lute lost first round NCAA games to Toledo and Idaho. It was also fun with Mr. Davis, regardless of your inane opinion of him. It was not fun with Alford or Lick.

It is fun again now.

You know what you can do with your "facts".

In the first thirty year of my life, Iowa had five basketball coaches. They were O'Connor, Scheuerman, Miller, Schultz & Lute. Sharm was fired & Schultz resigned. The other three combined for a sixty percent winning percentage in the conference, five B1G championships & three Final Four appearances. Of course, I was too young to remember O'Connor, Cain, etc. But I heard many stories about those teams. When Lute left, the Iowa program was considered as or more prestigious than Kansas. People fail to comprehend this.

In my last thirty-two years, the Hawks have seriously challenged for the B1G championship only twice with no Final Four appearances. Now, fun is not challenging for the B1G championship & winning a first round game. Sure Lute lost a few games in the NCAA that he shouldn't have. However, he won a B1G championship & went to the Final Four.

To me winning is fun. Winning is B1G championships, B1G tournament championships & Final Four appearances. Man was it fun to watch Ralph's & Lute's teams play in the old place. I've been to Lambeau, Ohio Stadium, the Big House, Kinnick, etc. numerous times. Still, going to a game in the old place is the best sports experience I remember. You can tell me to shove it, but Iowa basketball has been mediocre at best since Lute left.

I will tell you to shove it. Alford won two BTTs and was the winningest coach in BTT history when he left. But for an obvious bad call against Northwestern State, that team makes a run to at least the Elite Eight. Fran came up one game shy of winning the NIT. Davis was a cheating UNLV team away from winning it all. With the exception of Coach Lickliter and Coach Raveling, Iowa basketball has been steadily strong during the period following Lute's departure.

The Iowa program was only ever considered more prestigious than Kansas by Iowa fans. The golden decade of Iowa basketball (from 1979 to 1989) is pretty much a typical decade at KU. I grew up during the Lute and early Davis years, so I fully realize that winning one game in the tournament isn't the same as going to a Sweet 16, winning a league title or going to the Final Four. But Fran has brought the program to a place where it's possible that Iowa could make the tournament 3 times in a row for the first time since 1991-93.

Would agree that since Lute left, Iowa basketball has been mostly forgotten on the national scene, with small exceptions.

Who said winning one game was making a run? I responded to a post that said it's been 35 years since we made a run into the Final 4 and I said it'd be nice to make the Sweet 16 since it's been 16 er 17 years since the last time. I agree that one win past the first round in 27 years is pretty pathetic but it's ok to be happy at winning an NCAA game after the state in which the program has been in recently.

I agree 100%. After where we've been the past decade, getting back to the NCAA's and winning a game is a good accomplishment. That doesn't mean I think it's the best this program can do, nor should we accept that. Just look at what Wisconsin is doing. In my mind, if they can do it, so can Iowa. Of COURSE I would like more - like getting to the Sweet 16 or beyond.

That said, I don't think being "only" a round of 32 program is a fireable offense, either. Not unless you're one of the blue bloods, anyway.

If you think the years with Roy Marble, BJ, Kevin Gamble, Lohaus, et all weren't exciting or better than mediocre than you should start cheering for a different team every season. But wait until the Final Four to pick your team. That way you can say your team made a run in the tourney every year.
This year's team was exciting and so was last year until the collapse.

Forgive me if I missed it, but when did McCaffery state that just getting to the NCAA's and winning a game was his ultimate goal for Iowa? I suspect he has bigger and better intentions, and I, for one, believe he is just getting started.
