Do we expect too much?

Maybe we expect too much from Iowa football. Seriously.

Other than being in a power 5 conference, who would want to play football here? We need to face certain facts:

In the bidding wars, we will rarely beat out Ohio St., Michigan, [the Big 2], Penn. St., or Mich. St. for 5, 4, or even 3-star recruits, with the exception of a home-grown lad or two. Even locals will probably go to the Purdue's, Marylands, Indiana's and Nebraska's etc...
We have struggled for decades to field a competent group of WR's b/c we are known worldwide as a run, run, pass team and little has changed lately.
We can't land a genuine, NFL caliber QB to save our souls.
We will NEVER be in a National Championship.
We will RARELY make the playoffs. Perhaps when they expand to 8 teams.
We will rarely make the B1G Championship, and even then, will fall to Ohio St., Mich., Penn. St. or Sparty.
Once every 6 or 7 years everything falls in place when we have a senior-dominated team and a weak schedule, we compile a 9 or 10 win season.
Each year, inevitably, at least 5, if not 6 teams will be better than we are.
We are too conservative, still, [tho there does seem to be a light at the end of this tunnel.]
In truth, we are very much like a very good Mid-major football team. We will never see a Mid-major in the playoffs until they expand.

I would agree with some who have seen that the calls against us have definitely cost us this year, but "they" say over the course of the year these should even out.

We all have a "mental image" of how strong or weak our favorite teams are year-in and year-out, be it football, basketball, baseball, wrestling etc... Most of the time fans will lean toward a team being better than they truly are; it's human nature. Are we blinded every year with unattainable expectations of Iowa football? If all [or most] of what I have put forth here is true, then 9-4, 8-5, even 7-6 records each year would be about the best we could do.

Even the best coaches in the world can't perform miracles EVERY year.

I agree with a lot of this, but you can't scream "poor us" while charging what Iowa charges for tickets and paying a coaching staff what they're paying them. You don't get to charge Mazarati prices and hand over a Hyundai and say, "What did you expect?"

Yes, fans expect too much, we need to be content with 6-6 seasons, and spend money to go to the bowl game so that Iowa is a sought after sewer bowl team and Kirk keeps his legacy rolling along.

If by we you mean you, then, yeah, we expect too much.

I doubt if you were a 4-star from Ohio or Michigan that you’d come to Iowa.

So know who the Hawks are and deal with it.
Or don’t. And keep lamenting that Iowa will never recruit as good as Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio, Michigan, California schools. I’ve noticed a trend. But that’s just me.

Well, as much as I like to bitch, and I do like to bitch, we were a handful of shitty plays away from being undefeated right now. Almost all of the breaks went against us this season and we were still in that position. Really, there's no way we should have lost any of those games; Pedo State was the most "deserved" loss...the other ones were just maddeningly inexcusable. Point being that Iowa has the talent to compete at the highest level, disastrous coaching and lack of execution notwithstanding.

What I'm saying is be thankful at the very least that we are closer to Ohio State than we are Rutgers.

We could land an NFL starter caliber QB and WRs if we coached and played them like NFL QBs and WRs. For crissakes we already run the pro set. Shouldn't be that tough of a sell.

as fans we expect the coaches to play talent over "union card" guys and have game management skills better than a 7th grade junior varsity team..............I guess that is expecting too much

We lost 4 games by 23 points (I put together stats in another thread), the best in the conference in terms of total points lost to by the competition. Iowa has recently blown out Ohio St, has beaten Michigan a number of times, ditto Penn St, etc. They had a 12-0 regular season run recently.

They belong, but it is just a matter of being consistent and putting it all together. If the Ferentz's can ever get their shit together, maybe we will see the promise land some day. It can be done, it is just a matter if it will be done. But, as it is, we are a good program, just not a great one.

Iowa is a slightly better than .500 B1G team during the Ferentz regime.
That is what they do.
That is what I expect.

You do actually...you do....because you are here talking Hawkeye football....and there are butts in the seats....and the winning clip is still top 25-30 in D-1 college football over the past 20 seasons. And the OP is spot on. I disagree with "expect too much" and keep it as hope for more. I hope for more, but i will still enjoy Hawkeye football at 8-4

Iowa was 6-0 in blowouts and 2-4 in games that were close in the 4Q.

So really they are a 9-3 team that was a little unlucky.

If they were a little lucky instead of unlucky they would have been 10-2.

There were a decent number of missing butts in seats on Friday for what Iowa charged premium for a "rivalry game". Don't think they didn't notice that.

Typical, ph. Rain, Wind, people travel to unite with families on Thanksgiving, Hunting season, students are on break, and its Black Friday. Give it a rest.

A rough weather forecast was the reason I stayed home ( I also stayed home to help my wife watch 2 grandkids) , put my ticket on Stub Hub Iowa site but it didnt sell. I sold tickets for N Ill, ISU, UNI, and they sold in hours as weather was great and early season. If last Friday was 50 degrees+ and lighter wind I would have probably went with my son and daughter in law or drove myself.

I thought at least some crazy fusker fan would buy it but definitely a bad weather type of issue.

win the games you should and have a chance to win in the ones you shouldn't. that is not asking too much from anyone or entity throughout life.
