Maybe we expect too much from Iowa football. Seriously.
Other than being in a power 5 conference, who would want to play football here? We need to face certain facts:
In the bidding wars, we will rarely beat out Ohio St., Michigan, [the Big 2], Penn. St., or Mich. St. for 5, 4, or even 3-star recruits, with the exception of a home-grown lad or two. Even locals will probably go to the Purdue's, Marylands, Indiana's and Nebraska's etc...
We have struggled for decades to field a competent group of WR's b/c we are known worldwide as a run, run, pass team and little has changed lately.
We can't land a genuine, NFL caliber QB to save our souls.
We will NEVER be in a National Championship.
We will RARELY make the playoffs. Perhaps when they expand to 8 teams.
We will rarely make the B1G Championship, and even then, will fall to Ohio St., Mich., Penn. St. or Sparty.
Once every 6 or 7 years everything falls in place when we have a senior-dominated team and a weak schedule, we compile a 9 or 10 win season.
Each year, inevitably, at least 5, if not 6 teams will be better than we are.
We are too conservative, still, [tho there does seem to be a light at the end of this tunnel.]
In truth, we are very much like a very good Mid-major football team. We will never see a Mid-major in the playoffs until they expand.
I would agree with some who have seen that the calls against us have definitely cost us this year, but "they" say over the course of the year these should even out.
We all have a "mental image" of how strong or weak our favorite teams are year-in and year-out, be it football, basketball, baseball, wrestling etc... Most of the time fans will lean toward a team being better than they truly are; it's human nature. Are we blinded every year with unattainable expectations of Iowa football? If all [or most] of what I have put forth here is true, then 9-4, 8-5, even 7-6 records each year would be about the best we could do.
Even the best coaches in the world can't perform miracles EVERY year.
