I it just me or did DJK look like a guy that was hungry but being held back today? It just looked liked he wanted to get the ball and run all over eiu but for obvious reasons wasnt being allowed to.
 
I highly doubt he was being held down by anything. Iowa completed 21 passes today. 8 went to TE and 5 went to RB. They didn't have to do all that much
 
I think Sandeman had a fine game, but it still frustrates me that DJK and McNutt are not on the field all of the time. Last year, DJK and McNutt could have had better seasons had they been on the field more. McNutt didn't even play most of the Michigan St. game and only was on the field on the last play because Sandeman was knocked out of the game earlier.

Sandeman is adequate, but I think DJK and McNutt are elite and should be on the field for every offensive snap.
 
It was just a cupcake game and Iowa doesn't run up the score for the fun of it.

As Jon said the wide recievers didn't have to catch many today.
 
It appeared to be the game-plan from the get-go. Make sure Stanzi gets used to checking down to the RBs ... and then also help push the development of our TEs forward.

We made strides in many of the facets that we seemed to want to make strides. Furthermore, EIU provided us with some decent resistance ... so that lessons could actually be learned.

As others have pointed out ... we got a lot of quality tape to learn from. The group definitely won't be heading into the ISU game cocky.
 
I absolutely loved the offensive game plan today. Iowa used a ball control short passing game to the tight ends and running backs. This was all about laying some serious ground work for the future. Stanzi showed he can be accurate (18-23) and make good decisions. Did anyone else notice the additional velocity he had today? He was throwing darts.

If Iowa can perfect this ball control passing game early in the season...and be consistent...DJK/McNutt/Davis...are going to have big, big years. Teams will have to start playing press to stop us. Play action will have guys wide freaking open. We will control the ball longer, wear people down, and punish them in the fourth quarter. I was actually impressed with the offensive line today...two very young guys in the middle, and they played cohesive for most of the game. EIU isn't on the level of UNI last year, but they didn't suck.
 
Understand that this was a cupcake game, but I would have liked to see some deeper plays to see how well the Line could maintain a pocket for the longer pass routes. Felt like we are vulnerable in that area.
 
I just re-watched the game and DJK played only 34 of the 55 snaps (before the starters came out). He pretty much came in every other series, which is pretty much the same as he was used last year.

He was only thrown to once and ran once. That doesn't bother me, as others have mentioned, the TEs and RBs were much more in the gameplan.

But our best WR should be on the field more.

Sanderman looked slow to me, especially on punt return, I think DJK is a better option at WR!!!!! I think Kirk is just trying to prove a point.
 
It just looked to me like he was hungry to do some damage but it just wasn't in the gameplan for a cupcake first game. His body language just looked like he wanted to run over somebody.
 
I say let our QB get comfortable with the three linemen he has never had line up to protect him before we ask him to hold the ball to let a wide receiver get open.
 
I really think Ferentz has some tricks up his sleeve, in regards to yesterday's gameplan. You can tell they were testing the waters. The ole jailbreak screen worked about as well as it has the last couple years, which was terrible. I really think Iowa could have gone on an air-raid extravaganza, but there was no need to. Get Manzi used to checking down, which was VERY obvious, and get the ball to the TE's. Don't show ISU anymore than you have too. I think Stanzi is going to open it up next weekend. Exploiting that weak ISU secondary. Plus, JH will be back, and I think its gonna be a ****-show.

My problem with Sandeman on punt returns is he doesn't catch the ball so many times. He let's it drop, when he could run up and fair catch it. He had a terrible Orange Bowl and yesterday wasn't great either.
 
Another thing to remember is that DJK had been a bit dinged prior game one. Thus, I anticipate that they were also trying to be smart about how many reps they were giving him.
 
What frustrates me is that the coaches refuse to put either DJK or Keenan Davis in the slot receiver position and elect to put Sandeman in there. As some have mentioned he is adequate but if any of the other receivers would have fumbled the ball or kicked the ball in the air leading to an interception they would be benched and get about 2 reps a game. Put your best athlete in the slot and we would have a better offense.

We are in for a battle the next two weeks and we will need to be very efficient on offense.

I hope that's the case, but it wasn't the case last year. DJK/McNutt platooned last year, while Stross was on the field most of the time.
 
Homer noted that DJK has been dinged up and they were trying to be smart about the number of reps. I agree.
