DJK on Vandenberg, 3rd WR for 2011

Despite your thoughts on DJK, this is great to know. Good to hear that we'll have some high caliber WR's next year

ty cobb also wrote letters to newspaper journalists about this great young talent that everyone should see. that talent? ty cobb.

i can see where some of you guys are coming from. maybe DJK is just looking for someone to say, "no DJK, no one will ever touch your abilities on the field". i personally don't believe that. i think the kid loves iowa and loved being a hawkeye. i think what he is saying is sincere and he wants nothing but the best out of the hawkeyes

Yes and no. If Jon had posted something like "Miller's take on Vandenberg, 3rd WR for 2011", it wouldn't have generated as many hits as quickly as DJK offering his take on those guys. People are still more interested in Vandy, etc., but it's probably more informative to get a take on those guys from a player.

Yeah, but that's not a very fair analogy, since Jon's not a former teammate. Had you replaced DJK with Stanzi, Sash, Tarp, etc. I think you would have seen similar interest. In fact, I bet Stanzi would have generated much more interest.

I agree with latrans, it's not DJK's persona that attracted attention to this thread. It's his access to these players.

The original post and the responses beg the question, why doesn't this site have regular chats/posts/interviews/etc. from former players? You get DJK to start a post here and chime in a few more times in the thread and people will be all over it. Mitch King, Pat Angerer, Brad Banks?

I kind of recall a former defensive lineman or linbacker answering questions on this or another site during the season (blanking on his name even though he's somewhat substantial), but getting a DJK or Angerer or Brad Banks to chime in on a regular basis (particularly in the time between end of signing period and spring practice) couldn't hurt.

The basketball team is horrible, so give Iowa fans something, pls. Thx.

This post went to 250 views in like 10 minutes at this late hour of the evening. the name 'DJK' can still attract attention that is for sure.

It's funny: I decided to click on the link (from your HN Tweet) only because it proferred a former Iowa player's perspective on other players. Sadly, I had purposely passed by the link twice because DJK's opinion is of zero value to me. I remember in past years (post-bowl games) when Brian Ferentz and Bryan Buaga offered future fodder on practice players. That, too, caught my attention--immediately.

So don't count me among those intersted in DJK. I will, however, be very interested to see if these predictions match future production.

I don't think DJK is blowing smoke up anyone's butt. I've seen KMM twice...once at the summer practice and again online @ Hawkeyesports.com. He is the real deal.

And I can also tell you that James Vandenberg has good mojo with Marvin McNutt -- they are quite close. James will need to learn to read defenses better, but he has all the tools and leadership intangibles that it takes to make an all-b10 QB. I see very little chance that Wienke beats him out.

Not a bad idea, though DJK would have to wait a few years for that. If he started that now, every thread would devolve into a secular entity with some people throwing shots at him and others defending him. Totally undermine the purpose.

Honestly, it would work best if we got a new player or two from the graduating class every year. By now, guys like Angerer are too far removed to offer too much insight on current players. So just for thought's sake, say we had Greenwood and Vandervelde for next season. Then after next season do the same thing with McNutt and Nielsen, and so on and so forth.

Highly doubt that happens, but it's fun to think about at any rate.

I agree that it's about access (which was the point I was making by using Jon in that hypothetical). The interest is technically drawn because of DJK, but it's because of his access.

I'd be much more interested in this if we could get a player to anonymously do this. I'd want him to be completly honest about who looks good, who's struggling, who looks like he's going to be a stud, who looks like they're in completly over their head. You're never going to have former players be honest in their assesments. They're going to be overly positive in all their comments.

has anybody mentioned what Jared Clauss does? Have ya'll missed that?

Good luck getting a current Iowa or NFL player to do anything. They don't have time to watch the games then write a decent column on what they see.

Jared has interesting stuff, but he doesn't have first-hand knowledge of what these guys are doing in practice. Which is why I suggested two graduated players from the previous season, because they have much more familiarity with the current players.

And I know it won't happen. It'd just be cool if it could.

You forget about some of the guys we have in this mix. Anxious to see some of these younger players develop and see how they perform on the field. I really think Vandy is going to be a solid qb for us. Three years in the system. He will be ready to go.

What a potential disaster....

that would be. What kind of teammate (even a former one) would post something anonymously on a message board about what is "really going on" in practice? Having played sports at the collegiate level, I could imagine the level of frustration with a supposed former "teammate" running down the coaches or players who are currently on the team.

Part of being a teammate is keeping what happens in practices and the locker room there, where it belongs. What exactly would be the point of "insider" reports saying that "so and so freshman really sucks"? Or that "Player X deserves to be starting over Player Z."

I really enjoy what Clauss does in his MMQB segments. He has a very good knowledge of what Iowa tries to accomplish on offense and defense, and shares what he sees by watching the game and explains why certain things worked or didn't. As far as what goes on in practice, that's what we pay the coaches for, and they should be allowed to operate in that environment without the whole world seeing what's going on.

EDIT: it was often tossed around by people that he was the true originator of his own internet hype & persona before signing at Iowa.

So Kirk Herbsteit was in on the deal?

Dude is Iowa's all time leading receiver and probably one of the best all around players with a ball in his hand of my lifetime. He lived up to the hype.
