I don't really get how NIL runs, who is handing out these contracts, who makes decisions, etc.
But presumably, each team is working with their own finite pot of money to spread around. $2 million that goes to one player means $2 million that ISN'T getting spent somewhere else.
So, while this might be chump change for some of the donors contributing to the NIL pot, the pot is still finite, and someone has to make decisions about how much gets spent where. So, what helps Creighton more for next year? $2mil for Josh Dix, or $1mil each for 2 guys?
BB has always been a game about stars, and economists have made the argument that NBA superstars are vastly underpaid, and run-of-the-mill NBA players are overpaid. That probably applies here, as well. But Dix doesn't seem like a superstar at the collegiate level...if he was, Iowa wouldn't have been so bad last year.
Everything is just so darn obscure. What is the rest of Creighton's roster getting paid? What is the market value for a borderline P4 all-conference guard? So many unknowns...
