DiNardo: Iowa class composite 12th in B1G; Maryland, Rutgers several notches above

recruiting rankings only matter when the kids actually don't transfer, get booted off the team, etc.

One could argue that both of these teams are in the middle of fertile grounds, so it's a little easier to sway talent.

You have a point. The fact is though that most of the really good players grow up outside the BIGten footprint.

Iowa competed very well in the BIG for years getting recruiting classes anywhere from 25-55 range. Wisconsin has done the same for the past several years, along with Michigan St.

It is about keep attrition at a minimum, and developing the talent that comes in. Wisconsin, Michigan St., Iowa, aren't going to get top 25 recruiting classes most years, but the team that does the best with what it gets will be the team with a chance to win the BIG.

League expansion and alignment have not helped Iowa. Iowa is now isolated in a recruiting dead zone. They can sell playing teams from the other division now and then, but it is going to be consistently harder to pull kids from the East.

this is true. but, it's not like we were really getting any kids from out east anyway. true, we did have one good haul from Coker's school, but i'm guessing that bridge is burned now.

It depnds upon what you call East. The Register published this.Football Recruiting Map | The Des Moines Register | DesMoinesRegister.com

yeah, but if you check out the last couple years, it's different than the first few years of the KF era. early on, we were hitting NJ hard. lately it's more focused to the midwest (ohio, michigan, illinois, iowa). we did have a nice string of kids from maryland though.

interesting to click through those lists. we have gotten players from all over, but a lot didn't even sniff the field. very few starters from the east coast. will be interesting to see how the focus of recruiting will be with the new staff in place. lots of turnover from a couple years ago.

Can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Our football recruiting is starting to make Lickliter's efforts look stellar.

I thought ranking never mattered for Iowa?? Is that perception over?

Great points. The only thing this current ranking tells me is that there is likely very little difference between most of the teams in the 30-60 range.

Having said that, for two years, OSU and Michigan have recruiting classes that are at the "Alabama level" and only Nebraska comes anywhere near them. If OSU and Michigan continue to reap top 5 classes EVERY year, the separation between these two programs and others will continue to accelerate.

Iowa can compete with UW, MSU, etc. Maybe this year will be tough, but things aren't as bad as people suggest (nor were they awesome when things were going well). Iowa does have little margin for error. If they had any offense at all last year, they would've beaten at least a few more teams, and we would've won 7 or so games.

We'll see, I guess.

Iowa frequently rates in the 40's nationally. I think 2008-9 were worse, though, right?

Seems to me that the University has given Ferentz pretty much everything he needs to compete at a high level in a league that is generally looked upon as weak overall. No more excuses should be accepted. Time to produce.
