Difference between Fran and Ben j.

How does Ben Jacobson take c-list recruits and turn them into tough defensive minded players who seem to always peak in March and Fran has high level recruits who are softer than cotton candy.

I'd love to have washpun and bohannon in black
And gold. I guess there is a certain mental toughness that Ben Jacobson teaches than Fran doesn't have.

#1. You can't teach mental toughness. Nobody can. You'll know when somebody "can" because that person will make 100 million a year on the coaching seminar circuit.
#2. Fran is a 1 dimensional coach. Ben is a 3 dimensional coach. That's the difference. But it's a BIG difference.

That's a fair question. One can say that Villanova got hot, were a better team etc. You have lower seeds all the time step up and upset teams. Iowa always seems to make it seem their seed was too high and the other's too low.

It is actually fun to watch UNI on the half court set. For the most part they are very patient and value every possession. With the exception of Washpun, most of their guys seem able to shoot the rock. And Washpun is just so darn quick.

And they play defense.

Life long Hawk fan and alum, I love UNI. This is a team, Iowa boys. Jacobsen is the best coach in Iowa, f*** Philly Fran. These boys should be playing for Iowa.

Ben is a good coach. Fran is also a good coach.

If we are believe much of what has been written on here about Iowa's seniors, we also have to assume UNI has about the same or maybe more talent overall than Iowa.

Both are good coaches.

I really like Jacobson's demeanor on the sideline. Does he ever scream? Players seem to respond to him and play calmly and confidently.

And he seems to enjoy himself on the sidelines.

Are we really doing this? At Siena, at Greensboro, FM was Ben Jacobsen.

Disagree completely, Fran wasn't taking these teams
To sweet 16's and the Missouri valley is not the cupcake conferences that Lehigh and Siena UNC Greensboro were playing in. The MVC is legit.

I really don't see how you can say Fran is a good coach. Good recruiter maybe. His game coaching leaves alot to be desired. You can say the fans don't know jack, alot of the kool-aid drinkers believe the coaches do no wrong. Iowa fans saw Beatherd was the future of Iowa FB, but Ferentz was loyal and slow to change. Most fans saw that McCabe just was not a gamer last year. Most fans saw that Gessell was just not the answer, especially in the last few minutes of the game. Unfortunately, coaches tend to be stubborn, and refuse to face reality. Some players look great in practice, but just are not gamers. Fran is not a good game time coach, period.

This year's Iowa team had 4 seniors...yet looked terribly out of synch and lost at critical moments in many games. Good coaching puts the right players together...and gets them to play together.

Jacobson knows how to do that.

Would have loved to have washpun running the point instead of gessell down the stretch this year.

Iowa has two better players in Jok and Uthoff but UNI has 5 guys who all are scoring threats and they play smart basketball... Good D and limited turnovers.

It is not a power 5 conference, there's a reason why Ben Jacobsen and Mark Few stay where they are at. Despite a gazillion power 5 offers.

No fooling. $900K/year in CF goes a hell of a long ways. $1.25 million/year buys a lot of fish in Spokane as well.

Two years ago Iowa went to OT in a First 4 game. Last year and this year they won as the higher seed and then lost as the lower seed. So I'm not following.

Raise your kids in a small town environment,no pressure at all if you go 18-16 next year......bring in the type of kids you want. Why crash and burn at a middle of the pack power 5 school.
