Did Kirk's quote referenced by Millen bother anyone else?

Apparently when asked whether this team failed to meet expectations Kirk replied that it wasn't him that made the expectations. Shouldn't a Big Ten coach getting paid a huge salary be expected to compete for the title every year? It's kind of ridiculous for someone in his position to be lowering expectations every year.

As much as people criticize Bielema for running up the score, I'd rather have a coach do that then struggle to put teams like Michigan, Indiana and Northwestern away.

Kirk has my respect for always defending his players.

When asked this particular question- I think we heard an answer that was defending his players.

I would guess that KF wants to win the big 10 every year.

he knows this has been a dissapointing year for everybody and at this point he is saying things to protect the players.

I don't even pay attention to what coaches and players say anymore.

it's way different behind closed doors what actually goes on.

This. I could not have said it better.

Love love love KF, but when A Rob got lit up early in the head THATS when I expected to see a fire ignited, and it didn't happen. I don't like the cheerleading stuff that Lynch, Fitzgerald, Stoops at AZ, and some of these other clowns do, but a cheap shot to the head calls for some emotion and defense by the part of the head coach. If A rob was my son and the KF does not say a word to an official about the no call, I have an issue.

Just got two separate texts that he actually said that. It's upsetting on the one hand, but I couldn't agree more with above poster, talkhawk. Disappointing. I like KF a lot, not calling for him, but he must answer the bell to the "BCS" era of football if he is going to recruit for it. Times evolve, so must we with them.

Good point. He just stood there like a wooden indian as if it didn't even bother him. That pi$$ed me off! What does it take to get that guy fired up? Seriously, what?

I'll have to agree to disagree with the majority opinion on this board. It's one thing to protect individual players from criticism, but another to lower team expectations to the media. I highly doubt 3-time championship winning coach Tom Brands would be heard making that comment.

The university is happy with a winning record and a bowl game evey year. Doesn't matter where. It's all about the money.

I, as many of I'm sure, would give my left one to be in that locker room day in and day out to figure out what is said, and/or not said.

When he spoke Friday morning at the I Club breakfast Kirk addressed "handling expectations" - he specifically said it is their goal every year to win the BT title.

I thought the comment was odd. It's like he just went back to the "We are just Iowa" mentality like we were just glad to have a shot at the Outback Bowl. Not this team, we should be able to state that our goal is the Rose Bowl and it is disappointing if we don't make it.

That's right...Iowa is just a Chevy. KF, incidentally, gets 2 cadillacs per his contract. Evidently, he cannot afford to buy Mary a car.

Can you imagine Gable even thinking that?

He's also complained about Iowa being ranked preseason nearly every year. Tom Brands loves having the #1 target on his back and defending it. Not Kirk though.

Totally agree with above quote. With a 10 year contract in hand and happy administration all the comments on these forums count for very little to him. If he wants to keep his friends around for coordinators and assistant coaches who's going to stop him? I remember a long dry spell between Evy and Hayden and don't want to go thru that again. A winning record and full stadium keeps the money rolling in. Remember what happened in BB after getting rid of Davis. Change is not always better. NOW if you want to change coaches get together the 30million to buy out his contract.:D

We were not ranked in the preseason for about 20 years. That is why he is here, that is his job. Everyone has expectations in their job. Ask Chet Culver. KF is the most high profile public figure in Iowa. You better be able to handle expectations for 3 mill a year, it comes with the job.

KF does not expect and demand to compete for titles the way Tressel does. The goal is to win a BT title, sure but the Tressels of the world demand, it or else you are not there. KF does not demand it. Tressel walked in from Youngstown St and with the exception of 06 has not faltered on that.

agreed! It is ok to show a little passion!

On a positive note our new BBall coach definitely shows passion during a game!!!!!! I love watching Fran react gets me fired up, so I can't imagine what it does for the kids playing.
