Did I sleep through an entire basketball season?

From the DMR today, quoting Rick Klatt in an article on whether to give free tickets to the students for the NW game (h3ll yes they should):

When we were marching our way towards a Big Ten championship under Steve Alford we had 2,800 students in the student section that paid to be there.

I'm sorry, what year was that?

The last BT (co-)championship for Iowa was in 1979, I believe. BTT titles, while nice, are not the same thing.

I missed the same season apparently...

Yes they should give out tickets...think about this: Michigan used to give away tickets to football games after building "The Big House" they also had a "band day" and ivited tons of high school bands to play at half...all in an attempt to show that the stadium wasn't empty. I know it was different time, but from where Iowa is coming from with the last few years, get fans there anyway you can.
It may be looked at like a gimmick, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to promote an up and coming program when so many have turned their back on Iowa basketball.

I don't pay attention to ticket promotions for Iowa as I live in Michigan, but I get UM promotions all the time and they have some great deals for people that want to go...there are times you see $5 tickets to games when they quite a few still left, including BIG games. You see people at the games in the gate where tickets are sold...anything to get fan support no matter what the perception is doesn't matter as long as they end up coming back.

So what types of promotions does Iowa do?

They falsely promote dollar hot dog nights and then when you get to Carver hot dogs are full price. Its really a slick move by the U.

I think Klatt just wants students to feel that a free ticket is something special and not to be taken for granted. I feel pretty confident that there will be free tickets for the NW game.

NBA teams do this as well, or atleast the nuggets do. Whenever there is a nationally televised game and they arent sold out I get an email with unbelieveable deals the morning before the game. I've gotten floor seats for incredibly cheap prices.

My guess is we were marching our way toward a Big Ten Championship and then Alf got lost and never got there.

Of course all student tickets should be free. Why not? They are already paying tuition and the Iowa athletic department certainly can afford it right now.

Rick Klatt is a thief for taking money for what he does. He couldn't even profitably run the Hawk Shop so they brought in an outside vendor to run it as Herky's Locker Room.

We must've all partied like a mother****er during and after that season since none of us remember it...or maybe Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones showed up and erased it from our memories because they're Buckeye fans!?!?

Rick Klatt has absolutely no idea what he is doing nor does he want to. Bascially collects his pay and does nothing...
