Did Greg Mabin get his own thread yet?

Showed some major testicular fortitude in the penultimate Pitt drive.

I will admit that I was thinking we should replace him with someone healthy throughout most of the game. Happy to eat crow. You have to have a lot of moxie to not have your best stuff, covering a phenomenal athlete, with the game on the line, and make plays like that. Kudos and get healthy, young man.

It'd be awesome to develop two lock down corners for both sides of the field.

He will contunue to get chances because king is a stud. Those were definitely confidence boosters.

He came up big in the second half. He was giving some cushion in the first half but when we needed stops he was velcro

I was looking for flags on both those plays as were the Pitt fans. Only because it was fairly close and being on the road like that. After watching the replays that's about as good as a corner can play those routes. Glad to see the refs keep the flags in their pocket. It just seems like a fan half expects to see flags on close plays anymore where the defenders get so little leeway. I was getting nervous when I saw Draper get burned a couple times earlier in the game... I can see how he didn't win the starting job....

I think these two will end up being our best CB duo since Spievey and Fletcher.

I could be wrong but I thought he had some poor coverage throughout the game though? But a lot of credit or the plays in the end though.

what about gair? I thought he really had some pad popping hits out there. Not sure how he did in coverage but really hit hard. Anyone else see that?

Not "poor" coverage, just gave a ton of cushion. Most of the blown coverages were actually team efforts, i.e., misreading zones and assignments. Like it or not, we're going to see that this season. Hopefully we see less and less from week to week.

Mabin did have some lapses earlier in the game. However, he is young and was dinged up a bit. I've seen enough from Mabin at this point to think once he gets some more experience and seasoning, he has the athleticism and physicality to be a really good corner. Going into the season, I thought Flemming would take it and run with it. Now I think it's pretty clear Mabin is going to be the guy on the other side for the foreseeable future.

I did like what I saw from Gair as well. He's another young guy without a lot of experience, but he's pretty physical and is only going to add to the depth of the safety position, which Iowa really needs.

Yeah you are prob right, I didn't write clearly enough. He, and pretty much all our DBs gave a lot of cushion at times. We used to do that a lot under norm, one of my biggest complaints.

I think with being dinged up, PLUS Boyd being a pretty good receiver, he erred to caution.

Those two plays at the end were absolutely stellar. As someone else mentioned, "testicular fortitude".

I feel good about the secondary. Mabin can play. He's an impressive athlete. I think he's on track to be 3-year starter, all-conference type player. You can't play corner any better than those last two plays. Some of the cushion earlier in the game was scheme I'm pretty sure.

I liked what I saw from Morgan too. Fluid athlete, good frame, delivers a pop. I'd like to see if he can rotate over to SS next year. King, Mabin, Lomax, and Gair would be as athletic of a secondary as we've had in a while. Fleming is a formidable nickle back as well.

You get extra points for using both of Anthony's last name. :)

I agree with thinking the DBs will be the strength of the defense next year.
I actually see Lomax sliding over to SS next year. He is a real beast at times in run support.

The secondary isn't short of athletes. Mabin may be the most impressive one with his size. He is ripped up. They just need the experience and confidence. I have no doubt that he King Lomax and Flemming can cover guys. Lowdermilk isn't a great cover guy by any means but he's solid at coming down hill in run support. For the most part this group is solid at tackling. I'm sure glad they aren't facing another back like that kid again this year.... (Gordan and Abdula will present their own challenges) Being run over is worse then out ran to me I don't know why.

Tall corners are all the rage now....Seahawks have tall guys all over the place. Mabin has the kind of length that helps tremendously against all these huge WRs. I agree that our secondary should be good the next three years...and the lbers could also...we have some good sophs up front also...this defense could continue to be good the next 2.7 years anyway....and if we have a hot CJ on offense, these next two years could be good.

Draper and Flemming were guilty of poor coverage. Mabin gave cushion but didn't have any errors.
