Did CJB win the backup job with his play?

Normally I would put this in the Professional forum but no one looks at that I dont think.

Anyway Garappolo signed for huge bucks and he looked seasoned last year. It would be neat to see CJB remain the #2 qb, get some reps in some games and practice, learn from Garappolo who was quoted saying he learned a lot of from Brady.

CJB would be ready to come in if needed and eventually maybe get the chance with another team.

I say it was nice to see the first meaningful snaps from a Hawk qb in the NFL since unlucky Mark Vlasic, who looked like a top qb for the chiefs I think before a really bad low hit knee injury. Maybe CJ can be that starter someday.

Although carrying a clipboard for a few years and socking away a few million by the time you are 26 is not bad either.

And I forgot to mention, CJ played well, helped win one or two games, pretty damn good. I have a few naysayer friends and sort of hawk fans who after 2016 said CJ wouldnt make the pros, I disagreed because you could see the quick release and strong arm which is high priority

I always figured he'd stick just because of his connections alone, but I'd say he easily earned the backup job, as well as maybe a bargaining chip for a trade down the road. For a rookie, he played pretty well, and seemed to have a good grasp of SF's offense and the professional game in general. I wouldn't be surprised if someone looking for a new QB took him as a budget option in a few years and became pleasantly surprised.

I see that also what you are saying about a few years down the road. But we dont know about most of these players how many head shots and concussions they have had. I can see a lot more players doing the Borland thing and maybe playing a few years, get some good bucks, then go on with their lives. The players like Staubach, Podolak, and many others who took their fame and turned it into good business returns is really what many should do.

Considering the beating CJ took in college, and the fact that he still opted for the NFL when he likely has a lot of possibilities for career paths, I don't think that's the case for him.

He's signed long term and has familiarity with their system. I'd say he's a lock for the backup QB job.

They seem to love him there too. The coaching staff had him in a no win situation and he was getting killed out there while he was playing. That Oline stunk. It can't be overstated just how good Jimmy G is considering what he did down the stretch (beating a really good Jacksonville D. I think they put up over 40 pts on them) The coaches I think would love for a guy like CJ to stay the backup. He's cheap. Will be on rookie deal for 2 more seasons yet as a 3rd round pick. Way easier on the cap then signing a veteran of any kind. The key to maneuvering within the cap is how much $ you allocate to each position.
If your breaking the bank for your starting QB then you can't overpay for his backup too and have the rest of your cap balanced the way you'd like. It's why Jimmy G was traded to San Fran to begin with. NE couldn't franchise him. Nobody can franchise tag a backup QB that's just stupid even if your starter is 40 yrs old. If your a NE fan though here's what might piss you off. If Brady didn't have those balls deflated and never got suspended Jimmy G wouldn't have played those 4 games and looked as good as he did. That's what spiked his value so much. Otherwise the market for him wouldn't have been to the point where they had to trade him or lose him for nothing. They may have been able to resign him to a lesser deal. They'll never know now..

he's cheap and long-term. he's the backup.
being the backup makes it easier to hate the 49ers again
