Desperate times call for desperate measures!

Why not Bob Knight?

This would put Iowa basketball in the national spotlight. It would guarantee a huge boost to season ticket sales. Most importantly, I think he would take the job.

It is an interestimg thought not sure I can see it happening in Iowa City. Phone call #1 has to go to Bruce Pearl though.

NO WAY!!! Give Bruce Pearl a call, can't hurt to try.
If Bruce says "no" then call Kevin Stallings at Vandy.
Many have said going to a mid-major coach is probably the worst thing we could do.
I say make a big splash, get a name guy, a proven winner, that will bring a level of excitement to this program we haven't seen in 24 yrs.
Think big Iowa fans, I'd like to get a coach that turns this around and stays here. (ie Kirk Ferentz).

Stallings is a horrible fit. I would be po'ed if that is the best we can do and he is by no means a "big spalsh"

Yes, cuz we all know that Kirk was the "big splash" "name guy" that was hired because he was a "proven winner"...:p

While i agree the basketball program is in a much different position as a whole....even with the fball team being bad when Hayden left. We've now gone out and gotten two hot young coaches with the first not winning in the NCAA tourney and the second not capable of winning more than 1 of every 4 conf games. The fan base in gone, literally Carver is dead. It will be a tough sell if Barta goes out and gets a no name guy, it just wont work and Carver will still be empty next season.

I'm not saying get a no-name guy...I was pointing out a bad comparison 20.

Personally, I am tired of the Indiana coaches. However, Bob Knight has proven to better than Lickliter and Alford. Still, I would go after Mr. Davis before Knight. And Keno and others.....

seriously - you people are on crack. This school and fan base ran Bob Knight's boy out of town on a rail. The program is a disaster. Bob Knight is old. Why in hell would he want to come here?

That being said it would be fun to watch and while I don't think it will happen it would be a better hire than whoever Barta does hire. I have absolutely zero faith in that mans ability to hire a basketball coach .. or football coach.......... or janitor for that matter.

What I meant with the Kirk Ferentz reference was that he has stayed here even after turning this program around, That Iowa wasn't a short term stop off on the way to a program with more tradition of winning.

This is a terrible idea, besides the obvious Knight-Alford connection, Knight didn't have a whole lot of success at Texas Tech and he was very hands off in the recruiting his last few seasons there. His son basically ran that team the last two years Bob was there. We need a coach that is committed to turning around Iowa and is active in recruiting.

I couldn't help but notice you didn't mention "he would win games" in your reasoning.

Sometimes what you don't say is more informative than what you do say.

I posted this in another thread, but I'd rather have Mr. Davis come in for a season and establish his style of play and open the door to have either Bruce or Keno come in and hit the ground running in 2011/2012...stupid, I know, but I like it the more I think about it!

I don't think there is any doubt that Bob Knight would win games. Big Ten Championships? Probably not. He is 69 years old. I doubt he would last more than a few years. But he would put Iowa basketball back on the map. He would bring back fans. And thus, it would give us time to find another high-profile coach, (e.g. Pearl), down the road, who might be more willing to come to Iowa when it's not in such shambles

If we could get Bruce Pearl now, of course that would the best option. I just don't know if he would come to a program that is down so low.

The bottom line is we need someone to get the fans excited about Iowa basketball again. We need a BIG name. There are not many names bigger than Bob Knight. If we can get Bruce Pearl, or another successful coach from a BCS program, than by all means, let's do it.

But I would much rather have Bob Knight than take another gamble on whoever will be this year's Mid-Major darling. We have done that twice, and it didn't work. UNI's Ben Jacobsen would be a huge let down. We might as well keep Lickliter.
