Desmond King

There are a lot of threads out there about Greg Davis being horrible, JC needing more carries, and Sunshine needing to start over JR. I thought I would try to post one huge positive that came out of yesterday's game. Desmond King is good, as a matter of fact, I think he is really good and has the potential to be great. For a freshman to play against NFL quality receivers the way he did yesterday is impressive.

Couldn't agree more, DJL. He has been impressive all year. Great hips and great recovery speed. Not afraid to put a hat on somebody either. Just think, if Lomax wouldn't have gotten injured, we probably wouldn't know who this dude is.

Miller struggled until late in the year, but I thought Lowdermilk minus the NIU game and the goof yesterday was pretty solid. You have King/Lowdermilk as starting points, you could have a nice secondary next year........Barring injuries, not really worried about the secondary moving forward.

Lowdermilk is still learning. He took some bad angles yesterday in run support, but had some good moments too. Whoever Miller's replacement is, needs to be strong against the run, and we will be in good shape.

He played great but it also helps that their qb couldn't hit the broad side of a barn...love king though

King was awesome. It has to be some kind of a miracle that a slow, plodding big ten corner like him could keep up and even blanket these speed of light SEC WRs. Welp, back to the field to get strong by lifting hay bales before next season starts I reckon.

He only did well because he has strong Iowa values, and eats a lot of corn.

A good cornerback need not have sprinter/burner speed - he needs to have good footspeed, amazing instincts, a knowledge of what each receiver and team will be trying to do, and knowing when to give space and when to close in. DK seems to have all that. The best I ever saw at Iowa for that was Tom Knight. He was not what I ever would have called a speed-burner either, but wow! was he good. And he also started as a freshman. I think DK can fit into that.

It got to the point where I found myself hoping they would throw his way yesterday and not at B.J. Lowery - and Lowery was a near-unanimous B1G 1st-team all-conference.

Yesterday showed we still have a ways to go on the D-line, especially against the bigger, more physical teams. And the replacements for our linebackers will have to grow up fast. But I agree that if we can find a run-stopping fiend to replace Tanner Miller, we will be just fine in the secondary.

King made huge play after huge play yesterday, and for much of the latter part of the season. I remember one specific sweep where he didn't make the tackle, but he hit the lead blocker into the ball carrier knocking him back a few yards and resulting in a loss. Didn't get credit of the tackle, but was the sole reason the play resulted in a loss. I also love how sure of a tackler he is. Kid is gonna be special.

I agree, I love it when Iowa has a physical secondary, and he is not afraid to get his uniform dirty.

He did this yesterday, too. Didn't knock Hill down by shoving the blocker, but slowed him down and knocked him off balance, and Kirksey (IIRC) cleaned up for a TFL. And his tackle on the screen pass in the first half (when there were about four blockers and King was literally the only defender anywhere near the play) was nuts. I still can't figure out how he made that play.

Thank goodness for the injury to the guy that started the season in front of him, otherwise we my have missed his fantastic play this season!

King has the tools to be something special in the next few years.
He improved each week and has really made the best of his opportunity.

Lomax better be ready next year, because I doubt many teams will be throwing King's way.

I think there may be a couple of guys that will give Lomax a run for his money at the starting CB spot. I like the depth we have at that position.

This. Despite losing two starters, I'm not too concerned about the secondary going into next season.

I also think King was one of the bright spots for Iowa yesterday. It gives me more hope for our secondary next year.
