Depth on Defense

Has Iowa ever had this much depth on defense without a notable drop off. 3rd stringers stepping up at LB. At least 2nd stringers at corner. Phil is definitely the glue holding the ship together.

To hold the attention of the reserves during all of those practices so that when their number is called, they're prepared to go. Every guy on the team is on message, regardless of where they are on the depth chart. That's the sign of a good coach.

Probably not. Certainly not on the DL. When you have that many guys who can play it helps the inexperienced LBs a ton.

Plus looking that the secondary, Stone is basically a starter now and hopefully when Hankins gets healthy that will give Iowa 3 CBs that can cover. I have no idea what's going on with 11.

No. The coaches in general had to shift philosophy to defend these fast paced spread offenses. In years past, Iowa's gotten caught being completely gassed in the 4th Q trying to defend teams with a core 16 players. They seem to have nice depth on the interior with plug-n-play players which is where it starts.
