Depth Chart for Penn State

Interesting to me that Gervase was moved completely out of the FS spot. I wonder if his backend calls just weren't good as the FS spot has a lot of responsibility with coverage calls....

He blew a coverage by a mile before the swap with Hooker; I'm not Phil Parker but I'm sure that one didn't make him feel warm and fuzzy.

It's one thing to whiff on the play. But to not only lose your starter job, but lose your position, tells me there was more going on than just whiffing on a running play...

Could be a combo of what happened in the isu game and the start of the north Texas game. Lot of blown coverages in that game. Not sure who was at fault but it appears it's opened the door for Hooker.

I'd agree, I just think that might be evidence of something not clicking.

Looking at the depth chart each week makes me feel better and better about next season. After seeing the young potential at RB, WR, DL, and even OL (Jackson and Wirfs), the only glaring concern is that we lose every single linebacker

He played most of the 2nd half against N Texas and the defense looked better.

Ya, FS is that position for Iowa that you just can't ever really mess up. Couple of blown coverages and poor open field tackling will get you benched. I suspect he might have been bite by the injury bug. The kid played lights out in the Wyoming game and then didn't look the same the next two weeks. All the same something is not clicking.

What I like is the quality youth on that depth chart. We need to find LBs next year. And that is about it. Im super excited about the future.
Hopefully the coaching gets the team playing better than the parts. Because the parts look really good.

I think Hooker just passed Gervase overall. KF and Parker have shown they aren't going to just pull a guy out of a starting spot permanently for a mistake or two. If they are the overall better option, they stick with them. There was a reason Hooker didn't RS last year, and that was because he was good. I'm betting he has been gaining the coaches trust more and more, and they feel he gives Iowa the best chance to win right now.

I'd agree with you overall, but Gervase still started the NT game. So Hooker hadn't passed him yet. I think there has been an issue of communication that is the FS responsibility that he hasn't been doing well at. Obviously not reading his keys right because there have been lots of times where the backend has just looked flat out lost and I think it's because Gervase has been communicating completely wrong coverages...

This has to be some sort of record for most 1st and 2nd year guys in the two deeps. Exciting for the future for sure.
