i looked up Denny Green's stats at Iowa and he played 3 years and had numerous carries his first 2 years but only 2 carries his last year. Was he hurt? Passed over?

I didn't start following the Hawks until 76. Dennis Green was before my time in college. I'm sure there's some on here who saw him play in person.

As a student I worked in the Hillcrest Dorm cafeteria and Dennis would come through the line occasionally when I was working. He was always courteous and friendly. You never would have expected him to be an NFL coach in 1968, but he was very mature for someone 21.

I saw him play in Kinnick one time. Very good tough player. I remember he caught a swing pass and took it in for a score iirc or maybe a lateral pass. Not sure about his senior year. Did he catch more passes his senior year because he was used as a receiver??

When reading Al Grady's "Another 25 Years With the Fighting Hawkeyes", I would guess several things: used more as a receiver, other RBs passing him up and, frankly, the Hawks sucked in 1970. It would be Ray Nagel's final season, in fact.

I thought he had something to do with the black walk-out at Iowa, which probably cost Nagel a winning season. That was supposed to be his best team. Obviously, I don't recall the details, but there were some problems in Nagel's final year, not football related.

I think he may actually have been one of the guys that tried to avert the boycott and was one of the first, if not THE first, to return.

But yes, that two-to-three-year period was bad all around: bad for team, bad for Coach Nagel, ba for U of I and, eventually, bad for Evy (then AD). Many point to Evy as the root cause of all the problems that lead up tothe end of Nagel's tenure as coach and Evy's tenure as AD.
