Delaney & college football playoff

Playoffs will ruin what makes college football so much more special than ever other sport. The regular season matters, every game matters. The call for bigger and more inclusive playoffs is already underway...just read this thread.

I already have the NFL for a worthless regular season and bloated playoffs. Do not ruin college football.
That is the most over used phrase associated with respect to college football. There have been several teams with unbeaten seasons where every game didn't matter, they never got a shot at the championship. Or for that fact several one loss teams, when another one loss team got into the championship game. How can every game matter when they don't have common opponents or play under similar rules meaning a one loss Alabama would always get in over a one loss Wisconsin or a one loss Kansas St. team.

For that fact what did the LSU at Alabama regular season game really count for?

You can have meaningless bowls if you want just let the major conference champions play it out for the national championship.

Playoffs would make college football nothing but NFL-lite. Forget tradition, forget everything but one thing...being one of the 4 or 8 teams out of 120 that make the playoff. The other 116 or 112 might as well quit playing after week 5.
Conference titles won't matter, just like in college bb now. Hey, UConn at 9-9 in the conference can win the ''get hot at the right time national tourny''. Who cares about the conference title or regular season?

As described above, the only way to maintain any semblance of traditon that has made college football the greatest sport, and far better than the NFL is to keep the traditional matchups in the 4 big bowls, and then having that committee pick the two to play for a mythical national title. Otherwise, to get a real champion, you have to start playoffs in week 5,with all 120 teams playing in a single elimination tourny, with losers going home after week 5 and the winners advancing to the next weeks elimination game....until only one was left....finally we can all sleep because we would have that cherished ''true champion''.

Keep the relevance in Iowa and the rest of the Big Tens regular season, where they could win the Legends at 6-2,then win the Big Ten Title, then play in the Rose Bowl as proud champs of the Big Ten vs proud champs of the Pac 12....and if the winner gets to play another game..fine,but I will be very happy winning that Rose Bowl.

Delany and Scott need to dig in,and make sure the Presidents know that the playoff is the crass money grab that will kill the golden goose eventually..cept for a select group of the same 10-12 schools every single year. The other 110 schools programs might as well start downsizing now,as they will not be able to keep up with the 200 million dollar programs like Bama,LSU,Texas, and Florida. Those four might as well just have permanant spots in the playoffs....that will be so exciting after ten years of the same schools....right.

It is not only a money thing, but an academic issue as well. It will be impossible for the strong academic schools to compete with the football factory schools. That is where the university presidents need to step in. They need to shed clear light on the different academic practices within NCAA institutions in their discussions regarding the post season.

This whole playoffs thing really sucks. I like college football tradition. It's fun, it's unique and it's exciting. We already have the NFL....we don't need a carbon copy of that at the college level.

But it appears that that train has left the station. So if we are going to do this thing, then we need do it right. And "right" doesn't mean taking the best four or six or eight teams. You take conference champions. If they aren't going to take conference champions, then let's just do away with conferences and put all 120 or so teams into one pot. There has to be a reward for winning your conference.....period. And by taking conference champions, you don't have to worry about a confidential computer program picking the teams or biased sportwriters picking the teams. Let it play out on the field.

You make it an 8 team playoff. You take the conference champions from the six major conferences (Big 10, Pac 12, Big 12, SEC, ACC and Big East) and then take 2 wildcard teams. You could put a committee together to pick the 2 wildcards and handle the seeding. As far as playing the games, I know it would never happen this way, but I think you play the first round games at the home stadium of the higher seeded team. You then play the semi-final and championship games at a bidded site (similar to how the play the final four and championship games at the same site in the NCAA Basketball Tourney).

If they want to do it right, I think that's how they do it.

Make no mistake,if this playoff happens, it is a huge blow to the Big Ten/Pac 12, and a collossal victory for the SEC/Big 12. It will be the worst stomping that Iowa has ever experienced at the hands of ISU....ISU in the Rose Bowl...how sweet that will be for the clones and Pollard. The one precious asset that the Big Ten still held, that the SEC wanted....they would get.

If Delany and Scott, and the Big Ten/Pac 12 presidents cave on this, they should all be fired. It is bad enough that the SEC/Big 12 run semi-pro football operations and kick our butts on the field, but now they kick our administrators arse in the board room also? If this happens,it will be the end of college football as we know it,and the golden goose might yield a couple of quick eggs ,but will die and produce less in the end.

This thread is very interesting…..I think many, if not most, just assumed everyone was playoff hungry and if queried I’d have probably guessed I was in the minority of liking all the bowls and college football the way it is for the most part. Apparently there are a lot of us.

I will admit to wishing we could find a way to let the Boise’s of the world show their mettle and a 4 team playoff would be “ok”, but to completely upset the integrity of the game is silly. It’s reached an epic level now. The biggest problem really is Poll bias. If they could devise a better system for polling and therefore “placing” the teams correctly then we’d have less SEC teams in the top 15 and we’d find out for sure if Boise or Utah or TCU could get it done. The thing is, it would only take once to shake things up to the level that we’d have more honest polling….outside of the South at least. I personally don’t think you should be able to vote for teams in your region at all.

First I think there is a major reason why so many hold on to the Rose Bowl. A lot of the younger generation (I even include my age group in that, late 30's) aren't old enough to remember or obviously weren't alive to know what the Rose Bowl meant to every Big 10 and Pac 10 team. It was Rose Bowl or bust there wasn't a Cap One bowl, Outback, or even MotorCity Bowl to get to at the end of the season.

You either were the Big 10 Champ or you sat at home over the holidays. Tradition is very important to a lot of people, I for one think a plus one is fine if done right but I also feel that if you don't win your conference you really shouldn't have a shot a winning a title. I know I know basketball is different but until they go to an 8 or 16 team playoff I think winning your conference needs to mean more than it currently does.
