Defense....

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the lack of heat Phil Parker has taken this year? This showing after having a month to prepare was pretty bad to say the least. There was no adjusting on the fly after they started gashing us. Just keep trying the same thing and play a base D and hope TN makes a mistake was what it looked like. That's not even taking into consideration the terrible tackling once they did get their hands on a ball carrier. Granted we knew going in their skill guys were good. But they had a ton of yards after contact and watching Dobbs running free in the secondary just frustrates the crap out of me. Gave me flash backs to all the other running qbs we've not been able to stop. In todays college football you have to bring a blitz more often then once a game. And not sit in a 4-3 the whole time when those 3 LBs can't cover anyone or tackle... It was just such a flawed premise going in I'm surprised the coaches had any confidence it it possibly working.

I know most are going to harp on the QB situation that's for sure going to be a hot button issue. But man if there isn't a drastic improvement in the defense it won't matter if Chuck Long walks back through that door...

The defense today was prolly the worst I have seen an Iowa defense play since the 1970s. It was terrible. The whole team was terrible — offense, defense and special teams were are horrid today.

You apparently didn't catch either the Minnesota or Maryland games this year. Most of Indiana as well. Today was just par for the course.

It looks like the open competition did not really inspire anybody on defense. The defense seem to regress this season since the Northwestern game. The opposite of what happened last year.

I believe 5 years from now, this team will be remembered for a bad defense.

You know, the D wasn't very good this year. And wile we're on the subject, Special Teams absolutely stunk as well.

I keep going back to what the HC told me at the cigar shop, and what Urban Meyer said in his post game, good players make good coaches. Urban said if we didn't have good players we wouldn't be good coaches.

Therefore...a good staff is a staff that recruits well.

This staff has let KF down this year. The recruiting seems to be sliding the wrong way.

KF used to say that he liked coaches who are good teachers. Now that's necessary but not sufficient.

I expect he will make changes to his staff.

Defensive ends can't contain the edges.
LBs are poor in all phases.
Spearman is a DE playing LB because we have few other options.
Poor tackling from the safety positions.
Lack of speed all around.
I think that about covers it.

The bad thing is there have been several key changes to the staff in the last 4 years and Iowa hasn't gotten better during that time. Iowa replaced their OC, DC, WR coach, and special teams coach and those are just off the top of my head. Things have gotten worse when you take a look at everything post 2010 when many of those changes happened.

The tackling this season was the worst i've ever seen. We have a lot of talent on the defense but the linebacking core and the safeties need to get better for Iowa to be better.

They didn't pan out, time for a few new changes...O Line would be a start...it certainly would be nice if you could muster 1-2 yards in 4 down territory with a 250 lb fb playing tailback and an outland trophy winner at tackle....crazy...next, back to the premise here...tackling stunk all year...either recruit better or scheme better, or get a DC who can!

For the most part, our DL was pretty good most of the year...except maybe our walk on feel good story at DE. He was undersized and pushed around be the better right tackles he played against.

Our LB's were not good all year...and is a glaring weakness. The whole group was very inconsistent as expected when two of them are walk-ons and the other a new starter. We are going to need Bower and Jewell to get a lot better fast or next year could be a long one. Hopefully one of the RS freshmen can step up. The thought of three walk-on Iowa kids (Perry) playing is a stark reality. I find it hard to believe that's a good thing.

Gair should have been playing all year...period. Lomax had some great games and showed inexperience at times...but he was athletic and he could hit people. We needed another athletic guy with speed at safety to help the LB's. It didn't happen.

I also think Mabin may end up at Safety. King and Fleming at corner...Lomax, then Gair or Mabin at safety. Mabin's going to get bigger with that frame...although his tackling at times was suspect. He would be a great cover guy if he can show improvement in the tackling area...which I'm sure will happen.

Did you see the tackle attempt Lowdermilk made on the one touchdown run? He was trying to tackle the guy from behind and led with his shoulder. I don't think I've ever seen anyone try to do that in all my years of watching football.

KF needs to hire salesmen not relatives, Xs and Os guys, etc.....He needs to hire recruiters.

No, a new head coach needs to bring a whole new staff in. KF has had his chance, nothing he has done as far as changes has worked. It's year 16, he's lost it, time for a whole new staff.

The major problem with the defense is lack of talent. How can anyone look at what was on the field yesterday, or the entire year, and think that is a talented team? They looked like a high school team. This is what happens when a staff cannot recruit. Bower, Jewell, etc, simply do not belong out there, and it's easy to see why they had no other offers.

It doesn't matter where you point the finger, this program stinks! Defense, offense, they are both bad. Much worse than the talent in my estimation. I have never been one to call for Kirk to go, but I think it is time. There hasn't been much to cheer about since the early 2000's. A brief spurt around 2010 that sputtered into a good bowl appearance. Promise of Vandenburg's senior year that ended up being a disaster. Much promise little delivery. Time for the whole program to change.

Correct, in every aspect. Also completely agree that Parker has inexplicably received a free pass. I don't think that the serious deficiencies on offense form a legitimate excuse. We can focus on more than one problem at a given point in time.

What is there in KF's history that makes you think he will make a change to his staff. How many people has he fired or forced out since he has been at Iowa?
