Heard Mike DeCourcy on the radio here in KC this morning. Most of his appearance focused on Kansas/K-State/Mizzou as you would expect, but the final question was about Iowa, Alford/New Mexico.
His opinion was that Alford handled things poorly at Iowa, but that Iowa urged him out the door right at the point in time where he had rectified his biggest mistake at Iowa by upgrading his assistant staff. Now that is paying dividends for Alford at UNM.
Then Iowa compounded the problem by hiring a good coach (Lickliter) who is in way over his head as a recruiter in a major conference. He said Lickliter is a good man and a good coach, but that is not enough in a major conference. You have to be able to recruit to win in big-time leagues. DeCourcy was shocked that the Iowa administration did not require Lickliter to go outside his circle and get an assistant with instant recruiting ties. He was not optimistic that the Lickliter era will ultimately succeed at Iowa.
