I did some research for you guys and we will know a lot about our team at the end of the monthof December. We have duals with Chattanooga,ISU,MSU and UNI. We also go to the Midlands tournament. Here's a breakdown of each weight.

125: "Steel"(#1) has no ranked kids in the Duals. But faces #2. Precin,#4. Quiroga,#18 Lara and #19 Mango at the Midlands. My prediction: he is still #1 at the end of December.

133: Moore(#18) also has no ranked kids in the Duals. He faces #3 Graff,#8 Kubec,#10 Sentes,#14 Ashnault,#15 Ray & #20 Kircher. My prediction: he is ranked in the top 10 at the end of the month after losing to Graff in the finals of the Midlands tourny(rd. 1 goes to Graff but he will get another shot at the Big Ten tourny)

141: Ballweg(NR) has #12 Drouin from ISU at the Dual. He faces #1 Kennedy,#4 Nauman,#11 Mangrum,#12 Drouin,#13 Archuleta,#14 Shavrien,#15 Jantzen,# 18 Schmitt and #19 Goeres at the Midlands. My prediction: he is ranked in the top 20 after the month of December.

149: Carew(NR) has #9 Cheza(MSU) and #14 Pavlou(Chattanooga) in the Duals. He also faces #5 LeValley,#7 Nadhir,#9 Cheza,#10 Mason,#13 Vinson and #16 Pena at the midlands. Prediction: After he loses to LeValley in the finals of the Midland tourny he will be in the top 10.

157: DSJ(#12) has #20 Jones from MSU at the Dual. He also faces #2 Lister,#3 Fittery,#9 Welch,#10 John,#13 Salazar,#15 Cocozzo,#19 Fleming and #20 Jones at the Midlands. My prediction: He will be ranked in the top 5 after he goes and wins the Midlands!!!!

165: Janssen(NR) has no ranked kids in the duals. He faces #1 Howe,#5 Asper,#8 Miller and #15 Kaylor at the Midlands. My prediction: he should have problems at the Midlands but I think he can possibly be ranked at the end of the month.

174: Lofthouse(#15) has #8 Reader in the ISU dual. He also faces #3 Blanton,#4 Bennent,#6 Amuchastegui,#8 Reader,# 9 Manuel,#10 Covington,#11 Letts,#13 Henderson and #18 Darrington at the Midlands. My prediction: Lofthouse will be ranked in the top 8 after he loses to Blanton in the finals of the Midlands(rd. 1 goes to Blanton but rd. 2 will be different back at Norhwestern)

184: Gambrall(#9) has #6 Ward(ISU) and #17 McCroskey(Chattanooga) in the duals. He also has #6 Ward,#14 Kissel,#17 McCroskey and #19 Thomusseit at the Midlands. My prediction: after he wins the Midlands and goes 2-0 against Ward(if he wrestles at 184) he moves into the top 5 or 6.

197: Lofthouse(#16) has no ranked kids in the duals. He has #2 Brandvold,#5 Haynes,#6 Wilps, #7 Brown,#10 Giesen,#17 Hanke,#18 Kennedy and #19 Smith at the Midlands. My Prediction: I feel he beats Giesen and Brown at Midlands but that's it for now. He should move up to about #11 or #12.

Hwt: Raising(NR) has #14 Brantley(UNI) dual. He also faces #2 Trice,#3 Bradley,#7 Russo,#10 Tomei,#14 Brantley, and #19 Wade(E. Mich) at the Midlands. My prediction: he will be 2-0 against Brantley and he beats Wade and Tomei also and gets ranked around 12th at the end of the month.

Feel free to add any input that you would like. Just trying to get some talking out there.

Wow, I realize Midlands is a tough tournament, but I didn't appreciate the number of quality ranked opponents competing. 184 looks the easiest with only 2 top 10 and 5 top 20 wrestlers. I'll be curious to see our seeds since the team is so young and Midlands highly values previous Midlands success. Based on the seeds the Hawks will really have to earn their places. In the mean time, looking forward to see who participates in the Cyclone Open...only 12 days to go!

wow, you have put alot of time in on this. The midlands is Always a great way to test our team. Without many seeds- the kids will have to really battle. Cant wait to see them go !!!

expecting big things from dsj just like you are sir! this weight class is great for him and for some reason the only one im worried about is welch.

can't wait for midlands specially to see how steel is right out of the gate against precin.

carew is one that i think will make some noise as well and could surprise some ppl by end of december

i love this board when it comes to iowa wrestling!

Last year McD didn't face Precin because he was on the other side of the bracket and Long pinned him. Should be a great match if they meet up.

Pin2win, I'm not sure that Welch is the guy at that weight that I'd be worried about. There are a lot of really good wrestlers at 157 but I don't know that any of them are elite. There is a good chance for the dynamite freshman to make some noise like St John, Taylor, etc...

FYI, USAFhawk, Tobini, and myself saw a workout between Taylor and Welch over the offseason and Taylor definitely got the best of Welch!

GT great breakdown! 6 in the finals (3 champs, 3 2nd's) I would take that out of this young team anyday!

For those of you that are in the wrestling room watching, what is it that excites you about Carew. I know the same people were high on McD this time last year, and were proven right. Looking back, it was a good prediction, especially with all the quality wrestling he was getting from the likes of Clark, Moore, Ramos, and even Terry Brands. 149 doesn't seem to have the depth around it except with DSJ at 157; so is Carew just mainly working with Metcalf? Is he dominating the other guys? On the other hand the same question can be asked of DSJ. Just wondering what you guys are noticing with these individuals. Looking forward to the season starting soon.

My thoughts on Carew, unlike the other board where people are pretty down on him and love Kelly I have to disagree. Carew looks lots better at this point. Carew reminds me a bit of Perry. Is he that good I would say no but he has some serious funkiness to him. He is also getting better at the "basics". He wrestles with a chip on his shoulder and he has befriended me and I will stand behind him all the way. Maybe I'm a bit bias but he will suprise a lot of people this year. As for his workout partners Kelly helps with his confidence and Metcalf makes him better.

AFHawk, I am looking foward to going up to Ames in 11 days, look me up if you want. I am hoping FF and/or USA hawk decide to ride along if not I'll be there either way with black Hawkeyewrestling hat and black Hawkeyewrestling windbreaker on from Ironside's website!

welch might not be the elite guy im not saying we should be worried just have a feeling he will do good this year

I'd love to, but I'll have to rely on internet coverage. It's a long trip from Arkansas. Last year the only live event I made was the Big Ten tourney. Might be the same again this year, but I'm trying to make the Okie State dual...will be difficult with my daughter's competitive gymnastics schedule and we have a big inspection in my unit the following week.
