"Death by a thousand cuts-how Iowa's Defense failed against Illinois"

This team has a lot of trouble focusing at times.

The team is also missing that senior that keeps everyone on track. It's really noticeable, over the last few years we've had the pleasure to watch some good ones.

Right now this team just refuses to play defense or rebound. Defensive play and rebounding is all about effort, focus and communication. Until that happens, nothing will change.

I also believe that Fran needs to identify his best 7 defenders and make sure they get most of the minutes. I think Marble and White are giving very little effort on the defensive end. Maybe they need to sit a little bit.

Iowa scores 82.6 ppg. Marble + White account for 30.3 ppg - almost 37% of scoring. There better be some damn good defenders sitting on the bench right now to make this strategy work.

Wow, that was a really nice write up!

As far as forwarding it to Fran goes, I would bet these points have already been made to the guys. This isn't grad-level rocket surgery, this is basketball 101 stuff. I think it's all indicative of a team that's not "in the zone" mentally. Hopefully a switch goes on between now & the BTT.

For the love of God, I hope so. If not, we will lose to NW.

Who do you think are the 7 best defenders?

For some reason I don't remember much about Raveling's coaching. I loved his recruiting, and the game at Indiana where his friend, Bobby Knight humiliated him by making a point about having a 35 second rule by stalling for almost an entire half or the whole game.....

Haha, reveling's coaching, George was not a great in game coach, much like Alford. I remember watching Iowa at NW , the hawks werent playing well and George kept calling timeouts. But then the hawks would come out in the same offense and defense they were already playing and played most of the time, George had no changes and did nothing the whole game to try to stem the tide. Ugly.

But he was a salesmen and could recruit.

This BHGP article is just why I started the thread on getting back to fundamentals.

You can see the hawks not putting a body on players to block out.

They are reaching and trying for steals in both the halfcourt and while trying to get back on defense.

Poor defensive footwork not even staying between their man and the basket.

Not following shots,

you name it they are doing it now and I hope the coaches have them get back to basics for Thursday.

It would really be a shame for this team to lose thursday (I dont see it happening) and falling to a 10 seed and losing in the first round of the dance

Illinois abused us on the pick and roll in Champaign. I was pretty fearful they'd do it again.
